Initially the village of Duras was surrounded by ramparts and four gates allowed to enter it, there remains only the gate called Clock Tower. Dating from the XIIth century, reinforced with machicolation, this gate was registered in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1953
The part on the street side presents two openings for couleuvrines and a Romanesque opening under the roof topped with a pyramid, probably in the XVIIth century. The part overlooking the ramparts was fortified by a bretèche and archers, as well as openings for the roofing canopies. The upper part of the tower seems to have been rebuilt in the 17th century ©Historic Monuments base Mérimée architecture
Last but not least, the church (old temple) having no bell tower, it was finally the Clock Tower which will be topped by it!
