Situated in the heart of the most wooded region in Europe, the medieval town of Houeillès has long since oriented its economic activity towards forestry. The Landes forest borders the town with its maritime pines and offers visitors superb landscapes. Crossed by a few streams and lakes, the Landes plateau remains the land of sand and pine.
In the 12th century, religious conflicts led to the construction of the fortified church of Notre-Dame de Houeillès, in the heart of the town, to protect the inhabitants in case of attack. It is equipped with defensive elements typical of fortified castles: very narrow windows, a machicolated entrance door, and a bell tower that looks like a keep. The church, classified as a Historic Monument, also has a nave covered with an open starry vault, which brings some light inside the building.
