Église de Saint-Généroux

Description

Although the date of its construction remains uncertain, it is located most often in the 10th century. Former priory of the abbey of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes, the sanctuary was probably raised on the site of the tomb of the monk Generosus. Remodeled in the 12th century, the building was largely restored in the 19th century. Regarded as one of the oldest French churches, the Saint-Généroux church is a precious testimony of pre-Romanesque architecture based on a simple plan with a single nave separated from a sanctuary by a wall of three arches. The capitals of the choir of medieval times are equally rare. A stripped building whose only ornament is the order of stones. This church is part of the open and welcoming churches in the Thouet Valley. The municipality of Saint-Généroux is also labeled "flower city 2 flowers".
