It is built on the site of a chapel erected by Pope Adrian IV (1154-1159) and
dedicated to St. Peter in Chains. Construction and early expansions took place in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the current building being renovated in 1758 and enlarged in 1832 and 1894. The current bell tower dates back to 1932.
The church is characterized by the presence of four side chapels, one of which is used for a reenactment of the Lourdes grotto.
