This is the oldest part of the village of Dame Marie. An oratory (small chapel) was built on this site around the year 1000, along with its cemetery. In 1535, a church was built on the site of this primitive chapel.
It was restored and enlarged in 1859. In 1851, the cemetery was moved to make way for the square. In 1854, a series of buildings closed off the square to house the town hall, the boys' and girls' school, the post office and telegraph in 1888 and a pharmacy in one of the corners.
Today, the ground floor of this building is used for shows and a lounge for exhibitions, conferences and meetings.
