Fort Médoc, like the Blaye citadel and Fort Pâté, is one of three defensive elements designed by Vauban to lock down the estuary. This is the Verrou Vauban, listed as one of Vauban?s fortifications on UNESCO?s World Heritage List. Bastions, curtain walls, a few cannons, the royal guardhouse, the bakery and the chapel give visitors a glimpse of garrison life.
Never attacked, Fort Médoc proudly displays its royal emblems to the glory of Louis XIV on its richly sculpted front door
doorway.
