Authentic discovery of Verdalle, Tarn, Midi-Pyrénées

Come and discover a ride through the Tarn department on a loop of over 500 km, open to riders. From the Montagne Noire to the Pays des Bastides, passing through the Gaillac vineyards, the Tarn valley, the Sidobre and the Monts de Lacaune, you will be amazed by the diversity of our landscapes. This itinerary is largely based on the GR® network and can be discovered at your convenience over one or more days. A must-do with your horse or by joining one of the 10 equestrian tourism centres affiliated to the Comité Départemental de Tourisme Equestre du Tarn.

Country circuit at the foot of the mountain, take the path to the village of La Ségnarié passing by the cave of Lacalm and the town of Aiguefonde. Aiguefond is one of the many pretty piedmont Tarn villages tucked into the foothills of the Montagne Noire. Its name is Occitan and comes from the words “aigue” (water) and “fonde” (bottom or bed,) and indicates the presence of springs and underground rivers. The thickness of the layers of chalk sediment through which the water trickles in the entrance to the grotto or cave is proof of this. The cool waters of the Coubas, a charming stream, run down from the mountain heights. The walk continues through a bucolic countryside of meadows and handsome oak hedges. It is an initiation to the rural heritage of discrete and harmonious constructions such as “pesquiers” and “béals” (reservoirs and ditches for irrigation puposes) which were used to encourage the growth of grass (and hay.) Similarly handsome hedges of oak and alder provided shade for the cattle to rest in, to shelter from rain, or simply to scratch.

This path goes from the piedmont of the Black Mountain to its plateau, through the old farms of Courbas, la Récuquelle, les Soulhols, Prat Nouvel…on the footsteps of our history. First, you walk undergrowth among small chestnut-trees and some beautiful ones, local variety of chestnuts:” la dauphine d’Aiguefonde”; they remain from the cuts in the 50s when tannin was used in the wool industry. After 400m, you will be in the cool atmosphere of conifers. The top of the mountain was inhabited by some tenanted farmers with meadows, now covered with high beeches and forests with conifers: douglas used for its wood, fir-tree, pine, spurce, larch…From time to time,you will have magnificient views on the plain and the mountain. A different path will allow you to reach the la Récuquelle dolmen”Peyra Estampa”, mystic or place.of graves. A small path will lead you there. Coming down to Aiguefonde is as sporting as going up, through the communal forest. Back to the village, discover the castle, the small streets, the wash-houses all along the stream.

The trail of Puech d'en Blanc begins on the heights of the medieval village of Aussillon. It goes in the Black Mountain overlooking the Mazametain basin and arrives at the Lake of the Montagnès. A few kilometers on the GR7, and the trail returns to the village. At the gates of the mountain, the historic village of Aussillon stands up; it has been inhabited for centuries first of all by Gauls, then by Wisigoths. Along the half-timbered houses, the path goes up to cooler places, across chestnut-trees and rapidly high resinous trees. The forest tracks are above 300m from the village and the Thoré Valley that you can admire through clearings. Soon you will see the clear waters of the “Montagnès Lake”where you can swim or have a nice nap under the trees. The Pic de Nore which is not far shows its large slopes with meadows and moors. Back to the village, you will have walked with the old generations of woodcutters, shepherds or peddlers who used to walk between plain and mountain for their prosperity.

Historical trail that traces the history of Mazamet along the Arnette and its current. Mazamet owes its existence and its economic development to the Arnette River. It is the quality and the force of the tumultuous water flowing down the green slopes of the Montagne Noire that brought the industry to this town. Taking you on a journey along its banks, through hills and forests, this circuit will allow you to discover the industrial and human evolution that has taken place over the centuries. Just like a history book, 16 signs retrace the steps of the main elements of this exceptional adventure which, through the wool and leather industry, brought Mazamet and the surrounding Valley international acclaim. They show how the area has benefited since the Middle Ages due to the energy and the purity of the river’s water. After centuries of eventful activity, the Arnette River and surrounding valley has finally become a place of tranquility where the quality of this natural environment is respected and preserved. The circuit is the initiative of a partnership between the town of Mazamet, the Association of Heritage Promotion, and the mission for local employment.

Walk along one of the longest boulder rivers of the Sidobre (60% of your hike) near the village Lafontasse. In the chaos lower down hides Saint Dominic's Cave. Adventurers could enter the cave through a narrow opening, difficult to find. Time: 20 min to 1.5 hour - Distance: 500 m to 3.5 km From the parking area, pass by the Egg Rock and walk along the chaos (river of rocks). At the end of it, take the small road to get back to the parking area. On this road you may discover some granite quarry blocks, which, as wild animals, remain hidden in the undergrowth. You will also see some typical Sidobre meadows bordered by planted stones who follow, but do not resemble, one another. It’s not recommended to enter the cave for children under 8 years old and during bad weather. Be sure you wear good walking shoes. (20 min) On the road, before or after this walk, you should not miss the incredible Baptistou Rock.(out and back 20 min)

The medieval village of Hautpoul offers a superb panorama of the Mazametain basin. Discover the vestiges of Saint Sauveur, take the GR7 and continue your hike to the castle Trumpet then finish your route to the two old fountains. This path takes you through the picturesque little village of Hautpoul, perched above Mazamet on the mountainside. The charming medieval character of the village will urge you on and up. You can stop for a minute under the old chestnut tree in the square from which the walk begins; but before that, climb up to the statue of the Virgin Mary to admire the view of the valley below. You can get a real feel for the village perched on the mountainside with its natural defences formed by the rocky cliff faces below. The view will amply reward your efforts so far. This walk will enable you to enjoy a rich variety of landscapes in just a few kilometres, passing through the forest with a number of different species and constantly changing flora. You will come across other historical sites as well as the fascinating village of Hautpoul; the church of St Pierre des Plots, the remains of the tower of the chateau trompette, and finally the Spring path that lends its name to this circuit.

The monastery of En Calcat was founded in 1890 by Dom Romain Banquet. The abbatial church is open to anyone looking for spiritual serenity or willing to attend mass (the liturgy is given in french and gregorian). The two monasteries of Dourgne were founded together in 1890: Dom Romain Banquet (born in the hamlet called En Calcat in 1840) founded the St Benoit Monastery, gathering catholic benedictine monks, while Mother Marie Cronier founded the Ste Scholastique Abbey for the nuns . The two communities are independent from one another and both live under the rule edicted by Saint Benedict in the 6th century. Their respective churches are opened to anyone looking for spiritual serenity or willing to attend mass (the liturgy is given in french and gregorian). Monastery founded in 1890 by Mother Marie Cronier. A community of nuns live there, following the rule of St Benedict. Visit the church and the souvenir shop. Guesthouse for pilgrims and spiritual retreats. You will find there different workshops: book binding, reprography, weaving, ceramics, rosary making... Products issued from these crafts are sold in the souvenir shop along with food products and other handmade products made in other communities in France and Africa.

Located at the bottom of the Montagne Noire (literally: the Black Mountain) and in the Parc Naturel du Haut Languedoc (Nature Park of the High Languedoc), the charming village of Dourgne with its abbeys and chapels is a beautiful starting point for walks and treks in a natural and spiritual environment. Located in an area inhabited by men since prehistoric times, the village of Dourgne will charm you with its small central square and its arcades but most of all, with the beauty of the surrounding landscape and its mountain paths, climbing up to the top of a plateau, through the woods and alongside little streams of crystal clear waters. In the 1890's two benedictine abbeys have been erected in this place that favours meditation: the monastery of En Calcat is home to a community of monks from which originated Dom Robert, a local tapestry artist, while Ste Scholastique is a convent for nuns who live from the sales of their crafts. The village is on one of the four Ways of St James and pilgrims and walkers will enjoy the natural and spiritual environment. Things to do in Dourgne: - Walk up to the Capelette, a chapel built on the plateau of the "Desert of St Ferréol" (only open on certain occasions such as the guided visits organised by the tourist office, for more information call 0800 74 65 81). - go fishing or enjoy a splash in the pools that have been set up on the brook during the 18th century in order to supply water to the fountains in the village. - look for the chapel of the Bayou and its miraculous little cascade hidden in the woods. - and for the bravest, try paragliding to get down the hill! (for more information, call the town hall on 05 63 50 31 20).

This little chapel - or capelette - was built in 1947 by the monks of the Abbey of En Calcat. It is not open to visitors. The Capelette was built near the location of a former chapel that does not exist anymore but the place bears a cross as a token. The presence of a chapel on the plateau of St Ferréol probably dates back to the Middle-Ages.

On the rock of Abbade stands the giant statue of St Stapin, an emblematic monument of the village of Dourgne.

The riding club of the DICOSA offers pony rides to children from the age of 2, riding lessons, competitions... Guided tours are organized by the Nature Regional Reserve and the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) to discover the local wildlife. The leisure park has been granted the label "Tourisme et Handicap" thanks to all the arrangements it has made over the past few years to welcome disabled people and enable them to practice para-sports.

This centre is dedicated to Arthur Batut, pioneer of aerial photography, born in Labruguière. It illustrates the main photographic methods of the 19th century and the beginning of the XXth century (photographic equipment, original prints…). One century before drone : aerial kite photography. Thirty years after the first tests of aerial photography with aérostat by Nadar, Arthur Batut is the first, in 1889, who gets an aerial photography with a kite, technical more flexible and less onerous than aerostat, considering developing new applications in mapping. This Museum presents the life and work of Arthur Batut through different objects, archives and photographs. We can find all the devices made by A. Batut to take photographs and kite measurements but also his portrait activity and many other practices: history, archaeology, hiking…

The trading place covered hall, supported by 5 sandstone columns, dates from 1266. The patriotic foot guard was built in 1789. This covered hall is registered as Historical Monuments. The covered hall is mentionned in 1266 in the charter of customs granted by the Lord of Labruguière. Its location is directly related to the urban development of the city.

Symbolic of the urban centre, the wood timbered houses were built from the Middle Ages to the XIXth century.
