A stroll through history: the Camisards; the bourgeois homes of the sericulture era; the maquisards, those groups who resisted the STO... Stroll the narrow streets and discover the little stores that make Lasalle so rich today. A walk through history that takes you back to the time of the Camisard revolt, when Roland, a Camisard leader, was madly in love with Marthe Bringuier, who lived in the Château de Cornély... the great adventure of silk in the Cévennes, and the 12 Lasalle spinning mills that line the river... and the maquisards who, during the Second World War, formed groups of STO resistance fighters... Today, Lasalle is a peaceful village, and the views all along the trail will open up to you. The trail leaves the village center and climbs to the heights of Lasalle. Cross the village and join the right bank of the Salindrenque. Along the way, you'll find bits and pieces of the region's history through its landscape and the work of man. Calades, mazets, terraces, spinning mills and castles vividly portray a Cévennes history marked by resilience and perseverance. A Soudorgues, le plus dur est fait, il ne vous reste qu’à vous laissez glisser jusqu’à La Coste, et descendre par une route un peu "cabossée" en direction de Lasalle. Soyez vigilants. This walk winds through the lowest foothills of the Cevennes, where the limestone of the piedmont plain meets the granite slopes of Mont Liron. From the car park, head towards La Pierre Plantée / Mairie de Soudorgues via Les Quatre Chemins. Pass the mairie and then the temple (Protestant church). At the crossroads, turn left towards Col de Cabane Vieille / La Pierre Plantée. At the fork, continue towards Col de Cabane Vieille / Le Four à Chaux. The road leads to a hairpin bend. At the apex of the bend, a small path leads you to the lime kiln (do not enter the walled-in area – the site is dangerous). Take the GR63 long-distance hiking path on your left for about a hundred metres, then take the path on the right, which crosses to the other slope further on, to the rocks signposted Col du Mercou / Sous le Mauripe. Shortly afterwards, a signpost points left into the rocks Col du Mercou / Serre des Ubacs. This is where you start your climb to the summit of Mauripe. The path switches back and forth between the Salindrenque side and the Mercou side. At the top, take the path that winds left, then curves to the right. The descent, which is rather steep, leads to the Serre des Ubacs in a few minutes. Turn right towards Col du Mercou / Mercou. The path on which you return to Soudorgues / Les Quatre Chemins, forks off to the right towards Le Moina. Head back to the car park by following "Soudorgues / Mairie de Soudorgues".

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Immerse yourself in art and nature at Aigoual! This circuit reveals regularly renewed installations inspired by nature and the landscapes of Mont-Aigoual. A total of 12 works installed on an 8km loop. Les Balcons de l'Aigoual" land-art trail Here, artists portray the human/nature relationship and confront the climatic phenomena of the Aigoual. The works are therefore constantly evolving. Art inserted into nature returns to an essential source of artistic creation: observation and inspiration by nature. This itinerary allows visitors to cross different atmospheres and places, suggesting a sensitive and intimate approach to nature. Edition 2024: three new works on the trail: "Folies" by Elodie Cabos, "Rideau de pluie" by Yoann Crépin and "Regards" by Matthew Burton. Departure: Prat-Peyrot parking lot, Alti Aigoual station Duration: 2h30 Length: 8km Difficulty: easy Mountain bike access: possible Disabled access: possible on the ascent from Prat-Peyrot to Mont-Aigoual. The descent is on the GR6, access to which is limited to walkers. Elevation gain: 217m. Markings: a black circle and arrow on a yellow background. Access forbidden on the discovery path when snow-covered. Pets must be kept on a leash. The Aigoual summit walk extends to the Hort de Dieu arboretum, with the work of "France-Lan Lê Vu": "Avec mes yeux" ("With my eyes"). to Trèves, Lanuéjols and Saumane, communes which also feature emblematic Cévennes landscapes. These works are all accessible by footpaths or beautiful cycling routes. "Les Balcons de l'Aigoual à Trèves": two works are on offer in the pretty village of Trèves, on the banks of the Trèvezel river: "Ondulations" by Céline Pialot and "Mirage, entre chien et loup" by Sandrine Le Maguer; "Onde" by Jeanne Bourrat in Lanuéjols and "Refuges" by Steven Onghena in Saumane. The walk leads you past the village cemetery, which was in fact the Protestant cemetery. Soudorgues also has a Catholic cemetery, another particularity brought about by the turbulent history of the Reformation. Catholic cemeteries did not accept “non-Christians” or “heretic Christians”. There were countless exhumations of Protestant bodies in the 16th century. To put an end to this injustice, the Edict of Nantes ordered that “convenient” cemeteries be built for those who followed the so-called reformed religion. When the Edict was revoked, the order was also dropped. Huguenots had to renounce their religion to be buried in 'family” cemeteries in the countryside. Today, only the owners of these on-site cemeteries still have the right to be buried in them.

From 1685, the so-called “wilderness period” began for Protestants, who were forced to follow their faith with clandestine preaching in isolated spots. In the Soudorgues area, these included Villeméjeanne (called Campan), Les Bousquets, Espaze, La Faux and Grevault du Bedos (a mas or farm near the pass of the same name). They took refuge in caves or with locals. The Mas du Moina had several hiding-places. One, in the stables of the residential building, had an arrowslit to be able to see the Dragoons arrive. Near Soudorgues, hiding-places have been identified at Mas Novis, Euzière and Viala (in the hamlet of Horts). Their good-hearted inhabitants risked having their farms destroyed and being sent to the galleys for life. A little further, beyond Mas Guiraud, there is still a flat-topped rock known as Le Templas, which has a very narrow entrance. About 20 people could fit into it for religious gatherings.

The rocky path becomes wider and has stone reinforcements on the downhill side, which shows that it was once used by large herds. This draille led from Saint-Jean-du-Gard to the summer pastures on Mont Aigoual. At the Col de Mercou pass (570 m), there are panoramic views northwards over the Corniche des Cevennes. The pass was once a site for trade and commerce, with its own market. Its name is derived from Mercury, the god of travellers and commerce. There are also references to Melkart, a Phoenician deity: Semitic traders left traces of their passage here in the architecture of the old proto-historic bridges. Melkart or Melqart was the tutelary god of the city of Tyre - whose name means “strong king” in Phoenician – and was the god of riches, industry and navigation. He was worshipped in the tenth century BC.

From here, on a clear day, you can see the Alps (west) and the Mediterranean (south). Looking northwest, you can make out Mont Aigoual, the Col de l'Asclier pass, the Col de Fageas with its television mast and, if you follow the ridges eastwards with your eyes, the Rocher de l'Aigle, Piécamp and La Mortière. The lowest ridge is the famous Corniche des Cevennes. Behind it, further east, are the mountain ranges of La Vieille Morte and Le Mortissou, and, in the far distance, the ridges of Mont Lozère. Far to the south, you can make out the city of Alès and, even further away, Mont Ventoux. In front are the town of Lassalle and then La Fage mountain above Saint-Hippolyte-du-Fort. On the horizon, the Mediterranean shimmers furtively.

Besals or béals are channels that have been built to carry and distribute water where it is needed: plots of cultivated land, gardens, mills, etc. They were usually created and maintained collectively. The distribution of water to the various users was controlled by small sluice gates (esclafidors).  These were opened and closed at precise times of day, which were decided according to customary law – and could be subject to disputes and legal proceedings.

To store water, especially during dry periods, locals have dug and built a great number of gorgas. These reservoirs supplied gardens, fields and mills. They were fed by springs or streams, whose water was diverted by a paissièira and then transported by a besal (béal).

The governmental research organisation CNRS has installed a hydrometric station here that measures the stream's water levels and flow rate. You can easily see the graduated vertical scale. This is complemented by a pressure probe connected to a data recording centre. This monitoring equipment is part of a series of stations in the Vallée Borgne. The data they record have shown the important role played by tancats (cf. Precious reserves) in regulating water flow. They also confirm how effective the various measures are that have been taken to rehabilitate these structures and maintain riverbank vegetation.

Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you.
