The Shoe Museum invites you on a journey to discover the world of this timeless, universal object: the shoe. Situated in Romans, a town that owes its renown to leatherworking and shoemaking. The cells, once occupied by the Visitandine nuns, are now the setting for a collection of shoes from their origins to the present day: from unusual pairs from the 4 corners of the world to contemporary designers. All forms of footwear are on display, from the oldest to the most contemporary, from the most classic to the most extravagant and the most exotic, not forgetting the creations of famous bootmakers past and present. Musketeer boots, Chinese women's ankle boots for mutilated feet, medieval poulaines... 16,500 collector's items from antiquity to the present day, representing 4,000 years of history, are displayed in rotation in the cells once occupied by the Visitation nuns. There are also paintings (17th, 18th and 19th centuries) and temporary exhibitions. All presented in the former Visitation convent (17th century), set in landscaped gardens listed as a historic monument.

The tower is the sole remaining part of an 11th century feudal castle destroyed during the wars of religion. The tower can be easily accessed during a pleasant walk. There remains a long wall which was part of the castle walls. Overlooking the village and the valley and built on a castle mound, the tower can be seen from afar and reminds us that it was there to keep watch over a commune at a time when looting was rife.

The former railway station is now home to the Tourist Information office. This character building stands witness to the former railway line linking Lyon to St Marcellin via Viriville and St Antoine l'Abbaye.

The Henri St-Romme monument is topped with the ‘Statue of Liberty’ from Frederic Auguste Bartholdi (a gift from the famous sculptor to his friend Mathias StRomme, Henri’s son). It is a scaled down version of its ‘big sister’ Miss Liberty in New York City.

The Gare de Romans was opened in 1864 by the Compagnie Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée to serve the Valence-Moirans line, enabling the town to develop economically. Opposite the station is a neighborhood built in the 19th century by the Roman bourgeoisie, enriched by the shoe industry.

This close-knit company sub-contracts for famous brands and also produces their own brand of shoes "Made in Romans". Romans was historically France’s shoemaking capital, and for several decades the town’s footwear industry had a worldwide reputation. In the 2010s, new brands and artisan shoemakers established here, reviving the local footwear industry. This living museum includes shoemaking workshops open to the public and a shop selling a variety of shoe brands made exclusively in Romans.

The Tour Jacquemart stands atop an ancient gate in the original walls of the town. The tower was built in the 12th century, while the clock was installed in 1429. It owes its name to the automated bell-ringer who strikes out the hour with his hammer. n the 15th century, the Consuls ordered a monumental clock from Pierre Cudrifin, a clockmaker from Friborg in Switzerland. It has a large bronze bell which dates from 1545 and weighs 2,300 kilos. The automaton has been striking the hours since 1429. This carved wooden and zinc automaton is dressed in the "jackets" of the peasants, hence the nickname by Jacquemart. This character becomes the spokesperson for republican ideas. It measures 2.60m in height.

It was on Place Jules Nadi (the most shaded and busiest promenade in Romans at the end of the 19th century) that the kiosk was built in 1888, with musical societies already in the habit of giving concerts on this place. The city and its inhabitants have been enriched thanks to the development and prosperity of the shoe industry: it is the commercial travelers who take the initiative to build a kiosk in our city. Funding was found through subscriptions, a municipal grant and a big party on October 2, 1887. The construction of the kiosk also corresponds to the commemoration of the centenary of the States of the Dauphiné and the arrival in garrison of the 75th infantry regiment. The actively carried out work enabled the inauguration on June 3, 1888. On July 22, the President of the Republic, Sadi Carnot, came to Romans to lay the foundation stone for the Monument to the States of the Dauphiné. He is received at the Town Hall by the Mayor and can thus admire the kiosk. It Has been restored in 2018 and is once again hosting concerts and cultural events

As early as the Middle Ages, a town grew up around the collegiate church. The central square of the medieval town, through which the road from Grenoble to Valence passed for centuries... Since the 10th century, the square has been the site of a twice-weekly market, including the Sunday market, which remains a key event in Roman life. In Impasse Saint-Barnard, the Porte Saint Jean with its gear-toothed arch is in the Southern Romanesque style. On the square, at n°11, you can see the turret of the Hôtel Sablière, built in the 18th century.

The presence of a market in herbs and medicinal plants in medieval times explains the name of this place. You can see a mansion built there in the 10th century by the Clérieu family, with the aim of imposing its protection on the monastery of Saint-Barnard. In 1360, a monetary workshop set up there for two centuries. In the 15th century, a fortified door fitted with machicolations reinforced the security of the building. The monogram which surmounts the door is formed by the initials of Marius Charvin, owner of the premises between 1875 and 1900.

A Place which owes its name to the Small Market with Herbs and other Medicinal Plants which stood there. The building was a Monetary Workshop and welcomed 2 kings ... In the 10th century the Lords of the Clérieu Family tried to impose their protection on the Monastery of Saint-Barnard and built near the church a Keep: the Tower of Poitiers. From this Romanesque era a small interior courtyard remains, as well as a well and cisterns. In 1342, the Dauphin Humbert II authorized the coinage. Around 1360, a Monetary Workshop was installed there. To protect it, a fortified door was built around 1450. Note the beautiful lion head to the left of the machicolation. In the 15th century, the Monetary Workshop of Romans became one of the main centers of the Dauphiné. The kings of France and the governor of Dauphiné order to strike gold, silver and billon coins (copper and silver). In the 16th century, Henry II suppressed the Atelier. False parts nevertheless continue to be manufactured .... In the interior courtyard, an elegant spiral staircase witnessing Flamboyant Gothic, serves the Floors and the Keep. This hotel worthy of the Kings welcomed Louis XII in 1511 and Henri III in 1575.
