The GR® de Pays Beaujolais-Bugey par la Dombes links the hills of the Lyonnais to the south of Bugey. It winds its way through the vineyards of Beaujolais, along the towpath of the Saône and through the Dombes region of lakes. The GR® de Pays Beaujolais-Bugey par la Dombes starts from the GR®76 near the village of Sainte-Paule (Rhône) and crosses several lines of hills before joining the Saône. It crosses the Saône to enter the Ain between Anse and St-Bernard. From here, it follows the towpath to Parcieux. It then crosses the Dombes plateau and its ponds. It crosses the Ain at the Chazey bridge, and after skirting the Rhône, climbs up to join the GR®59 in the Bugey mountains.

It is since 1964 the 1st conservation area of France and one of the vastest groups Renaissance of Europe, 24 ha. 427 ha, that is 10 % of the city of Lyon, were classified UNESCO world heritage on December 5th, 1998. Founded by the Romans in the 1st century B.C. as the capital of the Three Gauls, the city has continued to play a major role in Europe's political, cultural and economic development ever since, and is vividly illustrated by its urban fabric and the many fine historic buildings from all periods. In all, 500 hectares have been listed and in particular four districts which superbly represent Lyon's history. Fourvière, the first of the historical sites, gives us a very accurate idea of the ancient world in Lyon thanks to its Gallo-Roman site. Old Lyon is a magnificent mediaeval and Renaissance district. La Croix-Rousse was listed for its industrial heritage, concerned mainly with the silk industry. Finally, the Presqu'île area features an architectural style typical of the 19th century. UNESCO chose Lyon as this is a city which has been faithfully preserved throughout the years. Nothing has been destroyed in these districts.

Its 3000 hectares of undeveloped land, 2200 hectares of natural park, 850 hectares of forest and 600 hectares of protected environment make it one of the largest peri-urban natural parks in Europe. The 350 hectare lake and its beaches offer delightful opportunities for bathing. There are more than 1,000 species of animals and plants represented, including 230 bird species, 25 mammal species, 40 types of dragonfly (studies of bats), and 800 plants (including more than 33 types of wild orchid). The Grand Parc de Miribel Jonage has been given "Lyon Ville equitable and durable" ("Lyon, a town devoted to fair and sustainable practices") approval. A third of the 400 hectares of crops are certified organic, including 6 hectares of hemp. There is also a wide range of sporting activities available at the Grand Parc of Miribel Jonage with marked paths, nature discovery trails, tennis, table tennis, badminton, archery, climbing, trampolining, golf (9 hole course) and a golf practice putting-green! You can also enjoy the rollerblade and mountain bike paths, rope bridges and a 212 m descent above Eaux Bleues Lake. Hire of catamarans, sailing boats, windsurfing and surf boards, canoes, rowing boats, small boats etc. Grand Parc also has riding centres that offer horse-drawn carriage rides in July and August. There is a gym and a sauna. Refreshment stalls and picnic areas are also available. Dogs are allowed in the park if they are kept on a leash.

Trévoux Château was built in the late 13th century by the Lords of Thoire and Villars to protect the town and show their power. The octagonal dungeon has superb views of the River Saône, Monts d'Or, Beaujolais and La Dombes. The presence of a river toll and the town's geopolitical location meant a stone fortress had to be built in the late 13th century. The Saône marked the border between the French Kingdom (right bank) and the Holy Roman Empire (left bank). Trévoux was an important tolled crossing point on the Empire's land. Aside from stunning views of the Saône, Dombes plateau and Beaujolais, you can gaze at an imposing building listed as a Monument Historique in 1913 and seen as one of the Ain region's top sites.

Through two exhibition halls, you're invited to travel trough the universe of an atypical: Antoine Brun offers us his world view in the middle of the 19th century, with hundreds buildings models. Workshops for children from 4 years old.

The Château de Saint Bernard is located a short distance from Trévoux. This beautifully preserved structure has military architectural features from the 13th to the 18th centuries and is surrounded by its own remarkable gardens. The Château de Saint Bernard dates originally from the year 1250 and has a very colourful history and has been a national monument since 1997. The château has some fantastic views over the River Saône and its well maintained gardens. It is also well known for having been the one time home of artist and painter Suzanne Valadon and her son Maurice Utrillo who was also a renowned painter. The Château de Saint Bernard is open on weekdays during July and August and there guided visits available in French only.

A square tower made of gilded stones covered with a structure composed of three movable levers. This quick means of long-distance communication invented by Claude Chappe lasted from 1794 to 1852. The telegraph network consists of 5,000 km of lines. The Chappe Telegraph (fully restored in 2022) is a 4-metre square, 6-metre high golden stone building, topped by a mechanism consisting of 3 moving arms used to form and transmit coded aerial signals. This tower, the 55th station out of 58 on the Paris-Lyon line, was commissioned in 1805 and extended as far as Venice. This formidable means of communication, invented by Claude Chappe in 1793, ceased to operate in 1854. The French telegraph network was 5,000 km long, with 535 stations serving 29 towns. Interpretation and information panels outside explain how the tower and the telegraph network worked.

The restaurant has 2 dining rooms and a lovely terrace and specialises in frog’s legs and succulent free range chicken. You are always ensured of a warm welcome at the Hostellerie des Dombes as well as delicious traditional Dombes & Saône cuisine in addition to other dishes such as pan fried scallops and game according to the seasons. The restaurant is open throughout the year and can cater for 80 patrons in its 2 dining rooms and another 60 outside on the terrace (RESERVATION ESSENTIAL).

Opened in 1945 in a disused railway station the Restaurant les Platanes proposes a cuisine that is both traditional and very tasty. Chef and proprietor Serge Malapel offers lovers of fine food a culenery voyage through the heart of Dombes & Saône with such tempting dishes as frog’s legs in parsley sauce, fillet of carp, chicken à la crème, crayfish stew, fois-gras à la maison and game according to the seasons.

Some background: the estate was built in the late 18th century by the Barons of Vauxonne and native of Lyon, Albin Fortuné Pierre Saint Rousset de Vauxonne lived here between 1838 and 1851. For a century the Château des Loges was privately owned. In 1960, the Cave Beaujolais de Perréon was acquired by this Beaujolais property and a winemaking cooperative was created on the estate. The wine-tasting cellar was founded in 1962. In 1989, the château was renovated. Two years of hard work resulted in the estate as we can see it today. In 1995, the Lagarde family took over the estate's hotel business. The Château des Loges was completely renovated and transformed into 10 guestrooms (comfort, grand comfort and one family suite) decorated in an old-fashioned way and each bearing the name of a Beaujolais wine. The accommodation also boasts outdoor terrace areas, French-style garden, pool hall and air-conditioned restaurant for an elegant, fine-dining experience (Maître Restaurateur title). The chef uses local products to concoct traditional dishes that everyone is guaranteed to enjoy. All our different areas are equipped with heating, air-conditioning and are fully equipped in general.
