A hike that runs on gentle slopes between the Sorgues and Dourdou valleys, throughout a landscape with stunning colours and where the past has left its mark: graves dating from the early Middle Ages and an old quarry.From the Camper van parking lot which is the starting point, take right the prohibited direction, walk behind the school and along the graveyard.In the Garelle district, turn to the left and follow the tarmac road up to the Balros intersection.At the Balros intersection, carry straight on towards Vanière, the Vieuzet, the Tombes, and the Joncas.At the edge of the Vieuzet, leave the tarmac road and take to the left a track that goes towards the Tombes and the Joncas.After walking 10 minutes on this path, you will find on the left side, a big marked rock on which are the Visigoth tombs. Carry on the path towards the Joncas.At the signpost ‘’Balros sud-est n°10 ‘’, turn to the left and walk for 30 m, then take to the right.At the signpost ‘’Balros sud-est n°12 “, carry straight on towards the panoramic viewpoint.After 600 m, take the path that ascends to the left.After 150 m of uphill walking, you can enjoy the beautiful panorama. Turn to the left when leaving the viewpoint.At 100 m from the viewpoint on the right of the path is a signpost indicating a cave, 120 m further. This cave is an old sand quarry. At 160 m from the viewpoint is a signpost of ‘’Puech de la Martelle n°11’’, turn to the right towards Vabres via Saint-Apolit.At the signpost ‘’Saint-Apolit n°14’’ take right towards Vabres.On the way, pay attention to the large cypress tree planted against the Saint-Apolit cross.At the entrance of Vabres is the signpost ‘’Balise n°15‘’, turn to the right and walk downhill by the schoolchildren's path.At the signpost ‘’le Pesquier n°7‘’ in the la Garelle street, return your way by the small bridge, take to the right the small cemented road and walk back to the cars.

A peaceful and family hiking starting from the ancient Vabres cathedral up to the site of the Joncas, which intermingles typical colours, pastoral landscape and human heritageFrom the car park situated on the Town Hall Square, take the rue des Marronniers, then carry on opposite by the  rue de la Murette and follow the rue du Pasquié up to the Balros intersection.Once at the crossroads, take opposite the stone pathway for 100 m, then turn to your left on the dirt track.Arriving at the junction with the road, turn right and walk up to the first houses, then follow the path that slopes up across brooms up to the graves. Carry on by the ridge line to reach the viewpoint and enjoy the scenic views over the Sorgues and the Dourdou valleys.From there, join the Joncas path and notice further down the particular soil colour due to the former quarry when it was still in operation and to a 19th century plaster furnace.Follow the logging trail that extends the path and walk through the Joncas wetland. Slightly after the ruined house, take right for 20 m, then left on a path that goes along the edge of the wood.As you enter the woodland, take right the Pesquié trail that runs along the brook of the same name, up to the village.

In a landscape imbued with tranquillity, between two valleys foreshadowing the convergence of the Sorgues and Dourdou rivers, this large hiking loop invites you to explore a discreet and surprising heritage.The starting point is the southern corner of the car park from which you reach the schoolchildren's path along the alley of poplars. Next, walk along the graveyard to get to a crossroads.Take to the left the rue du Pesquier up to the Balros intersection, carry straight on towards Vanière, le Vieuzet, Les Tombes, and le Joncas.On the edge of le Vieuzet, leave the tarred road and take a track towards Les Tombes and le Joncas to the left. Carry on for 600 m.Fork to the left side to have a look at the Visigoth tombs, which are carved into the rock (follow the markings). Then, walk back to the ascending path towards le Joncas.South-east of Balros, turn left and walk an ascending slope for 30 m, then go downhill slightly to the right. At the next intersection, south of Balros, carry straight on the trail for 600 m. take the path that rises on the left for 150 m.Once you get to the panoramic viewpoint, enjoy the scenic view over Vabres l'Abbaye and then keep walking to the south for 100 m.On the right side, you can walk there and back to visit a cave which is an old sand quarry. Or continue straight on for 50 m up to the intersection of Puech de la Martelle. Then, walk downhill to the right towards Saint-Apolit.On the intersection of Saint-Apolit, fork to the left to join the road.At the road junction, turn to the left and carry on the tarred road for 400 m. Leave the road on your right, cross the brook and walk uphill through the woodland by following the marking signs.At the Frioulas intersection, turn right in a hairpin. Go down through the woods for 1.7 km. At the road junction, turn right and follow the road for 150 m. Turn left and jump over the brook. Follow the Rougeiras path towards Vabres.Near the edge of Vabres, at the Mas de la Vigne intersection, walk straight down the schoolchildren's path, reach point n° 2, and then the car park of the starting point. 

This pleasant stroll which runs along the banks of the Sorgues river and follows the course of an ancient railway allows to discover Saint-Affrique and the Episcopalian city of Vabres from a new perspective.From the Social Centre "Le Quai" (former station), head towards the bd de la Capelle and walk along the Super U supermarket, turn to the left to  leave the road and take the green lane. Walk behind the        retirement home. Carry on along the quays bellow the church, pass under a bridge and after having walked across the carpark, turn left on the rue du général de Castelnau. Follow this road for less than 200 m and go down left to amble on the green lane, alongside the river. Pass under a bridge and reach the roundabout. Turn right to walk across the bridge, then turn right once more just after the bridge (do not go up to up to the traffic lights), then turn to the left (between the apartment block and the Hospital), walk carefully across main road and take opposite a very small road that leads you to the green lane. Follow the green lane for 1.2 km, cross main road on the Pedestrian crossing and get back to the green lane opposite. As you reach a business park, pay attention to the green lane markers; at the roundabout carry straight on. Once you’ve passed the insemination centre of the General Confederation of Roquefort, turn to the left and walk between fields, then along houses. Follow main road on the right for 200 m, then turn to the left to pass between the community hall and the chemist's. You now reach the Camper-van service station, turn right to walk into the tree-lined alley up to the far end where you turn right twice to get back to main road.Retrace your steps back to St-Affrique.

Over five days spent walking between causse and rougiers, enjoy beautiful green areas, unexpected tracks and a magnificent medieval heritage that open up to you.This hike which is full of character starts from St Affrique and offers a discovery tour from the sometime harsh landscape of the Causse, up to the lands of the Rougier bursting with colours and promises.Time and people have left their marks along the route: rocky paths, long buissières (narrow passages between two rows of box trees), and sunken paths lined with dry stone walls.You’ll walk along the great geological fracture and the cliffs of the Combalou mount which gave Roquefort its reputation. You will explore the Tournemire and St Paul des Fonts amphitheatres, the Viala du Pas de Jaux Tower, the Cistercian fort of Saint-Jean d'Alcas, the pleasant village of St Félix overlooking the Sorgues valley, the Sylvanès Abbey which is one of the jewels of Cistercian art and the Montaigut castle standing proudly on a rocky spur and towering over the Rougier de Camarès.

This challenging circuit that runs along the ridges of the Saint-Affricain frontal causses and over the course of buissières and undergrowth, leads to the Roquefort shrine of the Combalou rock and to the splendid Tournemire amphitheatre.From the Painlevé square, take the D993 towards Rodez for 100 m, then pass under the porch to the left and keep walking on the stony path. Take the road on the right and in the sharp curve go straight ahead on the path to carry on by a wider track which goes back to the road.Take right the stony path which wraps around the Caylus rock. To the North-East of the rock, take the path which rises progressively and overlooks the D993 to the right.At the crossroads, fork to the right on the track towards the ridges. The slope is steep. Walk along      the cedar grove up to the ridge throughout pasturelands and groves of trees (enjoy the beautiful view over Caylus and St Affrique). Walk through the long bouissière that leads to the village of Tiergues.Walk across the village and before the exit, turn to the left to reach the graveyard. There, cross the old road and take the street between the sheepfold and the castle, walk around the castle surrounding walls and go through a tunnel under the road. At the tunnel exit, walk up to the left and cross the D3 road, take the path opposite that runs along the D993. Continue along this track.           Cross the road and carry on to the right for 100 m, then take the path on your left. Walk down to the Laumière castle and continue on the small road up to the D992. Carry on opposite in the artisanal zone to reach a ford. Once you have crossed the stream, fork to the right and walk along the Soulzon  up to the tarred bridge.In the first curve after the bridge, take the path on the left which runs uphill throughout the Conteyne woodland. Leave a path on the left, walk across the small road and carry on to reach the Roquefort Tourist Office. Walk around the Tourist Office, pass along the stadium and walk uphill on main street.  Nearby a small carpark to your left, take the ascending street to the right beside a big building (ancient hotel). Do not take the covered street but instead turn to the right and just after, walk up to the left on a track running along the cliff (when on the ledge, turn back and take a look at the two Baragnaudes pillars). Go straight on these alleys under the cliffs. At the Caves entrance, under a porch, take the Créance Street, climb the stairs and enjoy the remains of the St Pierre chapel (viewpoint indicator).At the view point indicator, walk across the grassy land and climb up a steep uphill path. Carry on throughout the undergrowth, then on open ground. Walk along the base of the cliffs of the Combalou with their typical great fracture.When arriving at the endpoint of the cliff and at the intersection of tracks, take the left path, cross the road and walk your way down to Tournemire (ancient railway city) on the Trumpet path. Below, walk around the water treatment plant, carry on the path along the left bank of the Soulzon. Walk across the Soulzon, then cross the railroad at the level crossing. Take left the rue de la Barrière, then the rue Française. At the car park of the former railway station, go up to the right and walk across Main street. You then reach the house of the Plesiosaur, a marine reptile which was discovered in the black soils of Tournemire.Keep walking on the road lined up with plane trees. Opposite the ancient convent, turn left towards the Brias amphitheatre via the chemin de la Fous. Before the bridge that goes across the Brias brook, take left the path that leads to the Tournemire Sensitive Natural Space. Arrival at . Arrival at the gite “la maison de la vigne".

The Caylus rock which used to be the bedrock of a feudal castle and the Tiergues dolmen, an outstanding megalith are the two symbols of this excursion in the heart the Saint-Affrique countryside.1 Start from the Painlevé square and follow the D 993 for 100m, then take the left turn under the porch and follow the stone pathway. Carry on along the road on the right hand side, up to the start of the bend, then walk straight on along the path in front of you and then follow a larger track that takes you back onto the road.2 Take the right turn onto the stone pathway that runs around the base of Caylus rock. Take the path towards the NE which slopes gently upwards and overlooks the D 993 which is to your right.3 Take the left track that runs in the valley parallel to the D 50. The walk is a shady path alongside the ravine and the Nougayrolles brook.  Leave the farm trail to your right that ascends towards the crest and the path to your left which leads towards Crassous. After the sheepfold the path gets wider and reaches a junction.4 Take the path that slopes up through woodland and ends at a plateau, nearby the Tiergues dolmen. Walk on the right side of the D 250 alongside the road, and then carry on along a sheep path until you reach the village of Tiergues. Take the road to the right along the graveyard and then walk through the village.5 When you pass the last houses and reach the calvary cross, take the path opposite which is lined with low walls and hedges. Follow a long “bouissière” (a path lined with box trees) which ends at the crest of the hill where you can enjoy a nice view over Saint-Affrique and the Caylus rock. Carry on along the crest through pasture lands and groves, then go through a cedar plantation, and eventually walk down towards the Caylus rock passing a cliff to your right.3 From here, follow the route you took back to your starting point.

This getaway that goes to the Nougayrolles mount crosses along its way the dolmen tour and holds in the heart of a pastoral landscape some magnificent scenic views over the causse of Saint-Affrique.Upon leaving the car park on the rue Lamartine, turn right and carry straight on to the Maison de la Mémoire. Walk down to the left on rue Pierre Cadias, then stay on your right to reach the rue des Potiers (graveyard road)Take the road that leads to the graveyard (D 50). Then, a bit further than the new graveyard, leave the road to take a left a dirt road.Walk along a brook and join up with the route de Bages that you take to the right. Make a wide turn.Walk off the road by turning to the left and head your way to the north towards Roubiac. After the last house, keep going on an ascending dirt road throughout the woodland.Reach the intersection south of Nougayrolles, carry on northward and walk close to a lavogne in leaving the access to the equestrian gite on the right (make sure you close the gate behind you). Continue on a small road up to the intersection with the route de Bages in Crassous. Take the road to the right and carry on for 1 km 100.Reach the road that leads to Boussac. Opposite, a path lined up with box-trees will lead you to the Puech Ibilié dolmen in a 15 minute time going there and back. Retrace your steps back and take the road towards Crassous in a north-easterly direction. A bit before the quarry to the right is another well-preserved dolmen, the Crassous dolmen.At the exit of Crassous, take to the right the boussière that gently slopes down to the D50 road. Walk across the road and carry on the track opposite. Walk across the stream on a lovely small wooden bridge and join up with the valley path which you take to the right.Keep going in the same direction. Walk along a sheepfold. Leave to the right the path that joins the D50 (alternative route towards Nougayolles). Reach the intersection with the trail coming from the crests.Carry on walking the path overlooking the D993 that can be seen below to the left. Walk around Caylus rock on a stone path and reach the tarmac road.At the intersection, take the road to the left and walk in a narrow path. Then, join a tarred road that goes downhill towards Saint-Affrique and leads you to the town centre.This circuit has been designed and described by the hikers association Les Cardabelles

This circuit that leads you in the frontal causses across small valleys and ridges, displays a whole rich heritage and offers a getaway through time and space, with some superb views over Saint-Affrique.From the Maréchal Foch square in Saint-Affrique, take the road towards Rodez (route de Tiergues). 100 m after the Painlevé square, pass under the porch to your left. Carry on the path and reach the junction with the road which you take to the right up to a sharp bend. Walk straight on a track until an intersection with a larger path. Take this rising path up to the road.Take right the stone track, then follow the path that ascends progressively and overhangs the road to Tiergues.When you reach the junction, take the track of the dale which runs parallel to the D50. Follow the ravine and the brook towards Tiergues.At the signposted intersection, take to the left a rising wooded path which leads to the plateau where the Tiergues dolmen is located.After your visit to the dolmen, walk to the right along the D250 and reach the hamlet of Tiergues. To get through the village, walk around the graveyard and walk past the church (notice the sundial on the façade of a house).As you get to the intersection with the cross, fork to the left and follow the trail that slopes gently down towards the D993. Take this road for 70 m and leave it to join a footpath on the right, then reach the tarred road which leads to Canissac and go further up to the left.Walk past the buildings up to the junction and head towards Soulsou. Walk around the farm to the South-East and take a wide trail which runs parallel to the ravine. Carry on in the middle of pine plantations until you reach an intersection.Leave the main trail and take right a path that goes across the undergrowth and follow it to the junction with a tarmac road that you take to the left. Leave consecutively two roads going to the left, then 100 m after a bend and a place called "Julhac", take right a track up to a junction with a tarmac road that reaches the town centre.

This loop circuit which is one of the longest hiking route in Southern Aveyron runs across the Saint-Affrique frontal Causse and leads you from dolmen to dolmen allowing you to explore some  remains of human settlements dating back to the Neolithic period.From the carpark, walk along the Pont-Neuf which spans the river Sorgues. Just after the bridge turn left at a hairpin bend to join the right bank of the Sorgues. Turn right to walk up an ascending trail "la Carrierasse" that leads to a narrower path rising up the mountain side called "travers des Cazes". Join the tarred road.After the Escarbassols, leave the road and turn right, then left on a dirt road. Make your way through the undergrowth following a northwest direction. Walk down towards the Riviéral ravine and continue on by climbing over a fence where you will find a wide trail with a hairpin bend. Keep going uphill towards the plateau along a hedge bordering a steep field. Join a service road and reach a junction. Turn to your right to reach the chapel.Retrace your way back to the road that leads to Boussac. Turn to the right, then first left and follow a dirt road for 1.5 km.Join the road which leads to Boussac. When you get to the intersection with the Nougayrolles road take the path opposite lined with box trees which leads to the fourth dolmen, the walk there and back takes less than fifteen minutes. Retrace your steps and take the road back towards Crassous. Just a little before the quarry, notice a well preserved dolmen to your right.At the entrance of the hamlet, leave the road and follow a stony trail to the left that runs between some houses. Wind your way down a twisting path and join the D 50 then the D 250 roads. Keep walking on this road for 250m and walk to the left through a “Buissière” which runs parallel to the road. Take a Causse pathway that first connects to the road, then leads to the Baldassé cross. Carry on this path Eastward up to the Tiergues dolmen.Follow the trail to the southwest running between meadows and thickets to meet a “buissière”. Carry on along this trail, then on a descending path through the Gardies ravine. Join the trail that connects Saint-Affrique to Tiergues.Walk to the right along the Nougayrolles ravine. Pass a sheepfold, then head straight on up to a junction with the path coming from ridges.Walk down towards the rocher de Caylus, pass around a rocky outcrop that leads to the road. Find a track to the left, then a narrow path overlooking the D 993. Join the road and retrace your way back to the town centre.Take care when fording the brook and climbing over the fence.

Bramabiau is one of those grandiose and bizarre works of nature. A veritable cradle of French speleology, the tour is 1 km long and very accessible. Vabres has kept many testimonies of its eventful history: in 863, a Benedictine monastery was founded in Vabres by the Count of Toulouse. Vabres abbey soon became the great abbey of the southern Rouergue amassing a wealth of lands and churches. In 1317 Pope John XXII, second French Pope in Avignon selected Vabres abbey as the seat of a new diocese comprising all the parishes situated south of the Tarn river. Vabres was thus under the Bishop’s and the Count’s authorities for almost five centuries up to 1790. Throughout its history, Vabres has undergone some tumultuous periods: the One Hundred Years War and the violent religious wars, yet the Gothic cathedral with its exceptional organ, the Episcopalian palace and some old aristocratic mansions have been preserved.

This bridge is also called the Bethléem Pont Vieux, the chapel that carries the same name is located on the right bank of the Dourdou river downstream from the bridge and is listed as a historic monument.The bridge was buit in 1278 and was probably the place where the turnpike called Peyralbe collected tolls. This arched bridge is composed of 4 semi-circular arches with triangular front and rear beaks.Cars still drive over the bridge.

Here you will enjoy an outstanding all-round 360º view with two fully documented viewpoint indicators. These boards provide information about the local geology, the various types of rocks to be found, the reason why this area is called the Rougier de Camarès, as well as how a meander is formed, a phenomenon which can be observed further down with "le fer à cheval" (the horseshoe) a meander created by the Dourdou river. The second board provides information about the village of Vabres l'Abbaye and on the creation of the bishopric in 1135.

This dolmen is situated 300 m North of Touloupy farm, up a hillside, atop a small plateau (private property). It is a fine specimen of a simple dolmen with no remaining headstone and an estimated tumulus that had a diameter of 4 m, now destroyed by farming. The current farmers and landowners have re-erected this dolmen.

Part of this building housed the village dairy, which was rented by the Roquefort Société caves. A Société female worker manufactured the cheeses in this premises with the milk collected in the village and the surroundings (around 15 to 20 cheese loaves per day). After that, cheeses were put together and transported by cart once a week to the Roquefort caves.The dairy ceased to operate in the mid-1950s. From then on, the village people took their milk to the dairy in Vabres l’Abbaye.

St Martin’s chapel dates back to the 10th century, and was the main church of the parish of Boussac. It is located on top of a mound which is 650 m high and was renovated in 1999 by a local association. Once a year, around August 15, an open air mass is celebrated, gathering between 200 to 300 parishioners and friends.

This engraved statue is made of Permian sandstone and was discovered in 1980. A chevron decorated belt and the round shape of the knees are visible.
