A tour of about 1 hour, suitable for children readers (7 to 12 years).

Thanks to the discovery booklet "Louise and Plumette", specially designed for children aged 3 to 5, discover the bastide and the medieval town of Pellegrue as a family, in the form of little games. The departure is from the Tourist Office of Pellegrue. You can pick up your free booklet at the Tourist Office or download it from our website. At the end of the tour, come back with the answers to the Tourist Office: a small surprise will be given to the children.

In the heart of the Entre-deux-Mers region, here you are in the bastide town of Pellegrue founded in the 13th century on a rocky spur. The surrounding countryside has long been a resting place for migrating cranes. So much so that the town's coat of arms depicts a crane sleeping on one leg. During your walk, you will pass through woods and hillsides now planted with vines. Another circuit in the town: Circuit du Pin Franc (7kms).

From the church car park, you will take paths through the woods where you will see some palombières. Then on the heights in the middle of the vineyards, you will have an exceptional view of the valley. There is another hiking trail in the commune: Boucle locale de la Durèze (1,5km - 30 minutes).

From the village, the starting point of the hike, the circuit takes rural paths in the undergrowth of oaks, hornbeams and beeches to go down to the Soulège, a small river that winds its way along some limestone hills Along the way, the path meets several points of interest, witnesses of human occupations at different times: wash-house, stone bridge, wind or water mills, mission cross, .. The rest of the route alternates between vineyards and woods, with several viewpoints on the surrounding villages and hamlets, before returning to the village of Saint-Quentin-de-Caplong A free booklet, published by the municipality of Saint-Quentin-de-Caplong, is available at the town hall and at the Pays Foyen Tourist Office.

The circuit goes through woods, vineyards and rural paths. It also takes part of the Vézelay jacquard road. You will discover a varied landscape along streams and wine castles. To see: the village church built in 1865 in the Romanesque style and characterized by a square bell-tower topped by a conical spire, and the Liret wash-house, outside the village.

Sink - Renaissance - Blond limestone with asteria. The model of this sink, salvaged intact from demolitions, and whose base was completely walled in, does not correspond to that of a window sink. The practice of leaving a small hole to look through from the outside dates from later in the 16th and 17th centuries, perhaps a late Gavache practice. This rustic sink has two recessed moldings at the base of the arch. These are not shelf ledges - which were used later - but decorative cornices.

Mill - 17th & 18th centuries - Limestone. The Couret paddle mill, known as "Le Petit Couret", has preserved mullioned bays and splayed corners dating back to the Renaissance. One lintel bears an illegible 18th-century date. Powered by a pair of grindstones, the mill operated until around 1920. The millstones, in good condition, were then sold. With the water passage closed, the wheel quickly silted up and the remaining mechanical stones were buried under a thick layer of silt. The paddlewheel was over 3 meters in diameter. One of the wheel's metal flanges, removed from the spinning wheel, rests against the façade. The wheelwork has been preserved in good condition, but the millstream has been filled in.

On the heights of Massugas, this fortified house has undergone several modifications over the centuries. Two enormous defensive towers dating from the Hundred Years' War, pierced with loopholes and mullioned windows, frame an elegant 18th century central body. The ensemble was protected by a moat, as can still be seen by walking along the south and west wings. The numerous corbels that remain indicate that it was defended by a system of parapet walkways with machicolations. The estate is now a wine estate in AOC Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur.

The noble house consists of a three-storey building flanked at the southern and western corners by two circular towers, also three-storey. It was protected on all sides by an enclosure topped by a sentry walk. The south tower still has openings for fire hydrants. A few hundred metres away, there is a ruined round dovecote, which belonged to the estate and marked its nobility as well as the tax exemption which resulted from it. Today it is a private establishment: it is a wine estate.

Work - 19th century - Wood, iron and rope. Le Pré-Barrat, as well as the toponyms "Le Clos" or "Le Barrail", refers to a pasture entirely enclosed by hedges, used to temporarily park cattle, sick animals, oxen or cows to be shod. The forge was located at the entrance to the village. Some of the blacksmith's tools have been preserved in his workshop. The work was carried out under a shed that has now disappeared. The device comprised a powerful frame, in which the animal was attached to a fixed yoke, with all four legs bound and the body relieved by two wide trammels passed under the belly, and held by wooden winch rollers. Oxen are not as easily shod as horses. The drinking trough, where the cattle used to calm themselves with a drink, and the stone gauge of the knife-sharpening mill have retained their original positions.

Tower-dovecote - 18th and 19th centuries - Stone and brick. Two large dry families shared the windmill, in an area where mills are few compared to the amount of land planted with vines. In the past, bread production covered eight times as much land as vineyards. Wingless mill towers still stand amidst the vineyards, sometimes even on wine bottle labels. Laurent, the miller, used the mill for one family. Blanchet ran it for another. In 1874, the mill's stones were used to build the dovecote tower, part of a vast farm that grew steadily, with a hay barn, stables, a wine storehouse, corner dovecote towers, covered with slates in the 19th century, a porch-tower, marking the main entrance to the square courtyard, and a gallery-hangar, used to house tools...

Château Blanchet - 19th century - Asteriated limestone. Château Blanchet consists of a two-storey main building clad in classic Bordeaux-style tiles and flanked by two pavilions. The three-storey pavilions feature Mansard-style roofs with terraces, breakwaters and coyaulure. A vast 17th- and 18th-century farmhouse adjoins the rear of the château. It includes a barn-stable, framed with gabarre beams and ribs, and a wine-making cellar, equipped with a vast crusher on rails running from one vat to another, a wooden press and a hydraulic pomace press, operated by a locomobile. The bread oven, plum oven and forge were housed in the same building. Two wells supplied the castle and farmhouse, each equipped with a ram and water reserve. Private - Not open to the public.

Des Marques Templières" lintel - 16th and 17th century - Castillon limestone. The hamlet of Gouzourde was home to a number of ancient architectural features, many of which were used to pave roads in the 20th century. This lintel decorates a window that probably dates back to the Renaissance. According to tradition, the signs carved in relief are the marks of the Templars. A number of houses in the township are engraved with curious figures, which are not assimilated to the marks of tacherons. The latter are less well known, with 173 different marks for Saint-Ferme Abbey alone.

Lady" window - Renaissance - Castillon limestone. This window is crowned by a sculpted lintel, similar to the "Templar Marks" lintel and several others adorning houses in the hamlet. A female figure is carved in relief, perhaps evoking the local lady. The house has mullioned windows and an arched sink, similar to the one in Pironet, as well as a fireplace.

Commandante mantel - Renaissance - Castillon limestone. A few preserved elements in the house probably evoke the existence of a former noble house. The origins of the dwelling can be traced back to a feudal motte at the top of a hollow valley, overlooking the road that runs alongside the Durèze river. According to tradition, the local knight welcomed pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela via Auriolles and Saint-Ferme. The place may have been run by Templars or Hospitallers, as in Saint-Antoine-du-Queyret, often confused with the former. This chimney, known as "de la Commandante", may have been used during the pilgrimage period.
