This stage of Santiago de Compostela goes through forests and pastures. The stage ends in Ostabat, a famous village because it is the point of convergence of the routes from Le Puy, Tours and Vezelay.

A pass not to be missed on the mythical "Hendaye-Cerbère" crossing after the first 7 the first 7 km are easy and go up the beautiful hills of the foothills with a moderate slope of 7% on average. Its location further north, free of the main peaks allows amazing views of the views of the Pyrenees and the Landes plains..

This is a rather long and demanding stage, which should be tackled early enough to give yourself time to tackle the different heights. After the hills of Mauléon, it is indeed a mountain that the route proposes to cross beyond Ordiarp, at the Ehutza pass. As getting to higher ground is always synonymous with wide views, it is finally with great pleasure that we will switch to the valley of Saint-Just-Ibarre.

Leaving Saint-Blaise Hospital, the Pyrenean Piedmont Trail enters the Basque part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department, more precisely on the roads and paths of Soule. The toponymy changes, the relief too. More marked, it forces the hiker to play jumping jacks for a transition stage to Mauléon-Licharre.

This is an original way to climb the Osquich pass, a medium mountain pass renowned for the quality of its panorama over the Basque Country. If the final part of the climb is the same as the climb from Mauléon and Musculdy, taking the village of Pagolle as the starting point adds a pinch of difficulty. Indeed, you will have to face 2.5 km of severe difficulties at the exit of Pagolle, to conclude that, approached from the north, the Osquich pass is not a piece of cake!

This beautiful loop in the foothills offers a great diversity of landscapes. Meadows with their borders, woods, ferns dotted with pollarded oaks follow one another, without forgetting the streams on which mills have been built. One can then better apprehend the richness of this multi-faceted Basque agro-pastoral culture. There is no shortage of viewpoints: the nearby karstic massif of Arbailles, the flysch hills and the Madeleine summit, as well as the mountains of Haute-Soule.

This beautiful and varied walk goes through the village of Ordiarp and gradually climbs up to the chapel of Saint-Grégoire. It takes place in an intermediate zone of undergrowth and medium altitude pastures. It is not uncommon to come across cows and horses running free. The summit offers a magnificent 360° view of the Pyrenees to the south, the Lambarre valley (a district of Ordiarp) and the plain to the north. From the summit, the nearby protohistoric site of Gaztelüzarre can be clearly seen.

This looping route allows you to discover a still very much alive agricultural world. The farms that dot the bottom of the valley are still active, with their numerous meadows. This multi-faceted agro-pastoral culture is best understood by crossing the forests, then the pastures of the middle mountain. The chapel of Saint-Antoine dominates the Osquich pass, a favourite place for pigeon hunting in autumn. From the summit, the view is striking over the Soule valley, the mountains of Haute-Soule, the karstic massif of Arbailles and Basse-Navarre.

This stage of the Way of Saint James offers beautiful green landscapes, between thick forests and agricultural areas. It is quite long and does not cross any big village, so it is better to bring a picnic at the beginning. Finally, it is during this stage that we cross the imperceptible border between Bearn and the Basque Country..

The Church of St. Martin is a small church remarkable for the paintings on its ceiling, dating from the early 17th century. They represent the most important moments of the life of Christ. Some details (presence of oriental characters) suggest to specialists that they were strongly inspired by the Jesuit order For any accompanied visit, reservation is required at the town hall of Espès-Undurein. There is an explanatory booklet on a desk inside the building.

Located in Mauléon, La maison de la châtaigne basque is a place dedicated to the chestnut tree and its fruit, the sweet chestnut: from its history to its economy and processing. To better understand the different stages of chestnut processing, you can visit our production workshops, the drying room and the mill. There's also an exhibition retracing the history of chestnuts in the Basque country and around the world. At the end of the visit, you'll be offered a small tasting session, and you'll be able to find all our products in the store. As the seasons go by, you'll get a better understanding of the world of chestnuts by taking a stroll through the chestnut groves, and attending harvesting, scraping and peeling workshops. Chestnut brunches and tastings are also available (reservation required).

In Mauléon, on the second floor of the Maison du Patrimoine, come and discover the permanent exhibition recounting the history of the espadrille, an item of footwear inseparable from the capital of Soule. The industrialists who left their lasting mark on the town and, by extension, the whole province of Soule, also feature prominently. Photos, press articles, machines and tools used for decades will help you better understand this industry. You'll also discover the story of the Hirondelles, young girls who, from the end of the 19th century onwards, came from Spain to work in the workshops in winter.
