A short distance from the village of Saint-Céneri-le-Géreil, you will find one of the most beautiful villages in France. Alençon Museum of Fine Arts and Lace occupies a prestigious setting within the Cour Carrée de la Dentelle, the town's former Jesuit school. The birthplace of Saint Thérèse - the house of her sainted parents Louis and Zélie - is open to visitors, giving an authentic look at how life was in those times. The guided tour follows the lives of the Martin family - Saints Louis and Zélie, Saint Thérèse de Lisieux and her sisters - through 5 locations around Alençon: the hall, with its historic gallery, the exhibition of personal items, the auditorium, the house and the chapel. A film based on family correspondence shows us family life in Alençon where she lived between 1871 and 1877. The setting recreates the atmosphere and youth of the young saint. The chapel celebrates Sainte Thérèse in sculpture and frescoes and opens into the room where Thérèse was born. It was also here that Saint Zélie drew her final breath. Since 2010, the gardens have been laid down around buildings that are currently being restored and are typical of the Perche region, including a 15th and 16th century manor house, a farm house, seigniorial barn, stables and pigsties, bakery, hemp oven and covered well. The garden has been adapted to the buildings and their uses, with a vegetable garden and orchard, preserving traditional Perche cider and eating apples near the communal areas, a medieval medicinal plant garden near the manor house, an osmanthus and grass broderie, a collection of ornamental cherry trees, oak, lime trees and hawthorn. Over 300 vintage and botanical roses, a collection of peonies and magnolias. The garden is continually changing, and year after year its form and structure emerges. There are non-guided visits, but a guide is available on request.
