Exceptional for the fauna and flora it shelters, it is part of the Natura 2000 site "Les Boucles de la Marne". Not so long ago, the Grand-Voyeux Regional Nature Reserve was still a quarry, where conveyors extracted sand and gravel with a crunch of grains. Excavated in the 1970s, the cavities were gradually transformed into waterholes, quickly colonised by reeds and birds, thus allowing nature to take over. The Maison du Grand-Voyeux is open to the public two days a week, with the aim of helping visitors discover the Grand-Voyeux while preserving biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystems. A discovery trail and observatories allow visitors to discover the incredible landscapes of the site and the multitude of bird species that have found refuge there. Nature activities, workshops and thematic conferences are also organised regularly and free of charge (see programme online at www.maisondugrandvoyeux.fr). Managed by the Agence des espaces verts (AEV) of the Île-de-France Region since 1999, it was classified as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2012. A partner of the AEV, the Association pour la Valorisation des Espaces Naturels du Grand Voyeux is responsible for the scientific monitoring of the site and for certain activities.

Within a contemporary building, ARCHÉA suggests making discover the history of the Country of France through the result of archaeological researches led for 40 years. About 750 objects stemming from 87 present archeological sites in the collections of the museum are presented within an alive and interactive permanent exhibition. Movies, reconstructions, elements to be treated and models help to seize better this history. ARCHÉA, it is also the archeological site of Orville's castle and the ceramic heritage of the valley of Ysieux the discovery of which allows to understand the work of the archaeologists. Built around 1390, this keep is a monumental reminder of Crouy-sur-Ourcq's medieval heritage. Nestling at the bottom of the valley and built at the height of the 100 Years' War, it is the finest jewel in the crown of the Ourcq Valley. To delimit their vast territory, the Counts of Valois built defensive fortresses, often ostentatiously to show off their power and wealth. On the border with the lands of the Counts of Champagne, it was strategic to build this keep on the banks of the River Ourcq from the end of the 14th century. You can discover this keep, the only one in northern Seine-et-Marne and listed as a Historic Monument in 1962, during the European Heritage Days, or take a look at it from the outside during a walk in Crouy-sur-Ourcq.

Situated in the valley of Clignon and Ourcq at the bottom of the Orxois, the town of Crouy sur Ourq offers its green and quiet surroundings. Moors and forest form the setting for the town's heritage gathered arround the church Saint-Cyr and Saint Julitte. The fortress which watched over the village since the 15th century has mostly been destroyed except the Donjon de Houssoy witness to the medieval past. It's summit offers a panoramic view over village and surroundings.

This memorial military cemetery was erected in memory of the French soldiers died fighting for the Etrepilly taken, Sept. 7th, 1914 during the Battle of Ourcq (6th to 9th of September 1914). The Battle of Ourcq (or Battle of Multien) is part of the large-scale operation that was the first battle of the Marne. The offensive against the French allowed to stop the German advance and push them to retreat further north. On the territory of the Ourcq region, especially on the upland of Multien, the Etrepilly, Douy-la-Ramée, Marcilly, Puisieux, Vincy-Manoeuvre or Trocy-en-Multien municipalities were field of heavy fighting. A hiking trail will allow you to walk again in the footsteps of « les Poilus » and move through these lanscapes were, there was almost 100 years, a huge battlefield.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste church from the XIV - XVIth century - Listed as a Historic Monument.

This historical landmark was the theater of violent battles between the 6th and 9th of September 1914. This strategic ground, which was then invaded by German general Von Kluck – who had installed his general staff on site – had to be reconquered. After the first battle of the Marne, His Grace Marbeau, bishop of Meaux, made a vow so the city of Meaux could be spared and decided to erect a memorial at the very place where the German advance was stopped. This religious and patriotic monument was inaugurated in 1924 and has been a pilgrimage site in memory of the “Miracle of the Marne.” The monument is made of granite and cast iron and represents the Virgin Mary with the inscription “You will not go farther.”

Created in 1920, this necropolis gather the individual tombs dug right the battlegrounds of the Meaux region after the first battle of the Marne. Almost 990 soldiers who died in 1914 are gathered here. Among them, 940 are still unidentified. They have been regrouped in 4 boneyards. The 341 individual tombs are, for about half of them, the ones of French soldiers killed between June and July of 1918 during the second battle of the Marne in the North of Seine-et-Marne. Most of the men buried in ossuaries are soldiers and officers of infantry troops, Zouaves regiments, and regiments of Moroccan and Algerian infantrymen who served during the first battle of the Marne. Metropolitan soldiers who took part in the first battle of the Marne, such as Charles Peguy’s men, the 276th Infantry Regiment are, for the most part, from the region. Those who could be identified were then generally buried in a civil grave, in their town’s cemetery.

On the road between Barcy and Varreddes, and at close proximity of the national necropolis of Chambry, a small cemetery gathers the remains of German soldiers fallen during the Battle of the Marne of 1914. Set up in 1924, this cemetery gathers around 1030 bodies in a rather small perimeter. The fact is that 998 of these soldiers (among whom 985 are still unidentified) are buried in a large mass grave. Furthermore, under each cross present in this cemetery, rest two to four German soldiers. Indeed, military cemeteries constitute national territories. Thus, after the war, the goal was not to give up too much land to the Germans.

During the Battle of the Marne, this residence, owned by industrialist Eugène Boch, a patron of the arts and friend of many painters, served as a command post for several French generals. Villa la Grimpette was the home of painter and poet Eugène Boch, from a wealthy family of earthenware manufacturers. It housed the command post of General de Lamaze, commander of the 5th Group of French Reserve Divisions. From the upper balcony, it was possible to see, through binoculars, the plains from Saint-Soupplets to Penchard. General Gallieni visited the villa on September 7, 1914. He left in the afternoon to supervise the French attack on the flanks of the German army.

In the night of the 5 and 6 of September 1914, Germans are withdrawing from their position of the previous day and take refuge in Chambry, where they besiege the cemetery. They dig loopholes in these thick walls to try and repel, in vain, the counter-attack of the French army. Early in the morning, the French officers send Moroccan soldiers for an offensive on Chambry. At 10AM, the Turcos attack the cemetery, where the Germans are entrenched. Reports mention that Moroccan soldiers seized the cemetery in the afternoon, but had to retreat almost immediately under the fire of German cannons. The 7th of September, the Zouaves finally take back the village from the Germans army around 4PM, but also take an heavy toll in this attack. German loopholes, records of these violent battles of September 1914 are still visible today.
