This route crosses the inland Basque country, as we imagine it. Pretty villages with white and red houses, pediments and pelota players. Green hills where cows and pottoks graze in semi-freedom. All this is to be deserved and it will take some effort to enjoy these landscapes.

Magnificent hike along a line of ridges between the Nive and Bastan valleys. Choose a dry and clear weather to enjoy the panorama up to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and to progress in safety along vertiginous peaks and on very steep grassy slopes. Mountain feet required.

Modified itinerary : Distance 8.8 km - Elevation gain: 550 m - At the foot of the Iparla ridges, this route offers the hiker beautiful scenery. The ascent of the Harriondo massif overlooks the Baztan valley on one side and the entrance to the Nive des Aldudes valley on the other. At the highest point of the hike, flocks of manex (a local breed of sheep) will certainly be present to enhance the walk amidst the ruins of the bordes, witnesses of a pastoral activity that has lasted through the ages. During the return to the village of Bidarray, the hiker will be able to benefit from the crossing of a forest to discover some beautiful specimens of oaks tauzins, species little represented in France.

This hike on the Larla allows many discoveries. On this massif, pastoralism, iron and steel industry and a rich natural heritage are mixed. Indeed, the hiker will be able to discover during this walk vestiges of mining dating from antiquity (from the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD) until the 20th century. On the way, the walker will probably come across manex (a local breed of sheep) which play an active role in maintaining the open landscape of the Basque mountains. All of this in a natural setting where there are many naturalist curiosities such as the wetlands with the drosera on mats of sphagnum moss or the nesting of griffon vultures in the cliffs. Finally, even without going to the summit, the view that the route offers over the Aldudes valley will not leave the hiker indifferent.

Beautiful gallops to be offered at the end of the stage to the delight of all, with horses in good shape after hard climbs, and the crossing of Bidarray. Well shod horses will advance over varied terrain and through a mountain landscape heralding the ocean spray.

Wedged between the impressive cliffs of Ixusi and the summit of Irubelakasko, this village had about 35 occupied houses in the 1950s. It is especially since the 80s that it was deserted. Today, the village remains very well maintained. Some houses still welcome inhabitants during the summer season to spend a few days of vacation. The hiker will find peace and relaxation in a picturesque setting.

Exploited since 1771, the pink sandstone of the Artzamendi was used to make millstones, slabs, lintels, whetstones, press stones and border makers for instance. Evacuated from the site by ox-drawn carriages, these products were shipped to Cambo les Bains for mills in Bayonne and Dax. The current remains (150 millstones currently listed) concern mainly the Artzamendi mount and Itxassou.

Funerary monument dating from the Iron Age (800 to 300 BC), the cromlechs are circles of stones driven vertically into the ground. In the centre of this burial is a chamber called a “ciste”, in which the cremated remains of the deceased were placed. The cromlechs are a true witness to the very ancient occupation of the Basque mountains. At the Mehatse pass, explanatory panels give precise information on this type of monument.

Near Saint Jean Pied de Port, discover the ARNABAR farm. A free discovery tour of the farm with explanatory panels is offered from June to September in Irissarry, near our store in Ossès. During the summer, a person on the spot will propose an accompaniment and sale. All year long, in Ossès, the teams make you taste the foie gras transformed on the spot in the workshops located behind the store as well as a very good white wine selected to accompany our products prepared according to the traditions of our forefathers. From mid-July to mid-September, on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11am, Mixel takes you to the farm for a guided tour during which you will discover the ducklings in their heated pen and then the adult ducks on their different meadows. We end the visit with a tasting.

The church of Louhossoa is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and dates from the 17th century. Built in several stages between 1626 and 1674, the church of Labourdine architecture has a square tower that serves as a bell tower and overlooks the locality. Inside, the polychrome altarpiece, centred on a painting of the Assumption of the Virgin, immediately stands out. The choir, restored at the end of the 20th century, is also dedicated to Mary, with two paintings dedicated to her and carved ornaments depicting "The Annunciation" and "The Visitation", two scenes from the life of the Virgin. As in all Basque churches, the single nave is framed by one or more floors of carved wooden galleries. These spaces are traditionally reserved for men during masses. Dating from 1726, the bell of the Beata-Maria church is classified as a Historic Monument.

The Pas de Roland is situated on the path along the turbulent waters of the Nive, towards the Artzamendi. According to legend, the hoof of Roland’s horse, Charlemagne’s nephew, broke a rock in two in a gorge where the Nive flows, at a place now called Le Pas de Roland. In Basque, this place is known as Atekagaitz, which means “bad passage”.

From the car park, we'll take the GR10 towards the Méhatché pass. Buntings, tariers, pipits, and migrating birds of prey are to be looked for according to the season. At the pass, we will leave the GR10 to go down towards the south. We arrive thus on cliff edges not passing 1000m of altitude but not less impressive, opening the view on the valley of the Regata de Aritzacun. It is on these rocky spurs that one of the oldest colonies of griffon vultures in the Pyrenees is installed. Although the Egyptian vulture does not nest here, it is nevertheless observed from time to time. The kites often compete with them for a few thermals, where other birds of prey also migrate during the migration season. You can climb on Artzamendi to enjoy the view and the passerines that like the low slopes: crab, chocard. The two mounds are to be found here!
