On the borders of the Moselle, between Philippsbourg and Niederbronn les Bains, this horse riding loop is an invitation to discover an extraordinary nature. On sandy paths adapted to safe horse riding, you will be delighted by the dense forest landscapes punctuated by castle ruins.

A forest walk for the whole family to discover the natural and historical riches of the Pays de Bitche! Leave the parking direction of the D162F, then follow the green ring markings. Walk through the bog forest, cross the forest road and then the meadow to reach the hamlet of Waldeck, which was originally a farmhouse built below Waldeck Castle. At the pass, climb the forest trail hairpin left to visit the castle Waldeck. Nice view from the platforms (be careful, the stairs are narrow and sometimes steep). Then go back in 2 and turn left then right towards Erbsenfelsen. At this last crossroads you can continue left to see Waldeck Pond.After the rocky Erbsenfelsen and its arch, turn right towards the pond of Hanau. At the junction with the forest road of Hanau, a boundary marker stands next to a partially buried blockhouse. Continue straight on the Waldecker Hubel Forest Road and return to the car park.

Ideal walk for families. Start at the “Chalet du Wintersberg”,follow the signs from the circular tour (around the Col de la Liese). The “Chalet du Wintersberg” is open every sunday and bank holidays from midday (except in December) and offers refreshment and snacking.

A beautiful forest trail to discover the natural and historical riches at the Hanau and Lieschbach ponds and the charming old village of Waldeck. - A wooden pontoon allows access to the Lieschbach pond, which is classified as a nature reserve. - Falkenstein was built in the 12th century on a 117-metre rocky ridge and is the most important castle complex in Bitcherland. In 1564, only a few weeks after its sale to Philipp IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the castle was destroyed by a fierce fire after being struck by lightning. Some steps cut into the rock and an access ramp allow you to climb to the top of the ruin, where there are still some interesting remains. Along the way there are the following to discover : - The historical boundary stones from the 17th century marked the border between the former territories (County of Hanau and Duchy of Lorraine) at the time. - The pea rock with its round arch, where the rare peregrine falcon and the raven nest. - Waldeck Castle from the 13th century - The path to the peat pit of the Hanau pond You can download the GPX trail here :

In a pleasant forest environment punctuated by ponds where wooded hills shimmer, the walker reaches the ruins of the Château de Falkenstein, the most imposing of the castles in the Pays de Bitche. Built in the 12th century on the orders of the Count of Lutzelbourg, in order to protect his possessions in the Haguenau Holy Forest, the castle was destroyed by a violent fire in 1564. The building burned for five days and nights.

Discover the rich heritage of Baerenthal and its surroundings in a sumptuous natural setting. This tour will help you discover the natural and historical treasures that characterise the village of Baerenthal: the Grand Etang and its picnic tables, the silver spring, the ruins of Ramstein Castle. Ramstein Castle was built at the end of the 13th century to control the Zinsel valley. At the top of the ruin, an orientation table describes the panoramic view over Baerenthal and its valley. From the Zinsel valley, the ruins of the Grand Arnsbourg castle are accessible by two paths in the forest, one direct and steep, the other longer but easier. Equipped with a remarkable Romanesque keep, the castle was built on a hundred-metre-long sandstone bar consisting of two rocks separated by a fault. It was certainly built during the second half of the 12th century to watch over the road from Haguenau to Bitche along the Zinsel. The castle is mentioned in ruins in 1547

Set off to spend half a day discovering the Rhine Valley. By bus and by boat, you’ll have the chance to admire the villages and picturesque landscapes of the Frankfurt region. Take advantage of panoramic views across the valley from Niederwalddenkmal, a monument erected at the end of the 19th century to celebrate the unification of the Prussian Empire. In the summer, you can take the cable car over the hills to reach the monument and take in spectacular views from the sky. Stop for lunch in a riverside restaurant before boarding a boat to cruise down the river and through the heart of the valley. During the boat trip, which lasts around 1 hour 20 minutes, you’ll be able to see the Lorelei rock, Katz Castle and the village of Sankt Goarshausen while listening to the recorded commentary. After the cruise, you’ll head to a small tavern to taste some local wine. The Falkenstein castle is the most important castle in Pays de Bitche. It was built in th 12th century under the Count of Lutzelbourg's orders to protect the Holy forest of Haguenau. In 1564, the last Lord of Falkenstein sold the castle to Philip IV of Hanau Lichtenberg. The structure was in flames for 5 days and nights. Several buildings were rebuilt rather hastily but were finally dismantled by the French in 1680. The ruins that remain today crown a large sandstone rock, 117m in length, 2 to 10m wide and 22m high. Lieschbach Lake at Philippsbourg is a small peaceful peat mire and lake. On the outskirts of the villages, the 2km walk around the lake offers an exceptional panoramic of the forest and the rock outcrops. Thanks to a small wooden jetty, you can have a close up view of the wide variety of dragonflies that nest here. This lake is a nature reserve and is thus protected. Swimming and canoeing is strictly forbidden. You can reach the lake via the Hanau Lake following the path with the blue cross leading to the Falkenstein castle (35min). By car: coming from Haguenau towards Bitche, turn right after Philippsbourg into the small hamlet called Lieschbach. After 200m, turn right onto a track, continue 100m and there is a small forest car park on your right. Continue on foot to the lake (10min) Coming from Bitche: follow Haguenau and before entering Philippsbourg turn left into the hamlet of Lieschbach.

Built at the end of the 13th century by the lords of Falkenstein under the bishop of Strasbourg's orders, the Ramstein castle was built to control he access through the Zinsel valley. But during the 14th century, the Lords of ramstein transformed the castle into a den of thieves, robbing and exorting the whole region. Faced with this delicate situation, troops from Strasbourg helped by their allies from Berne organised a punitive expedition against the fortress. With war machines and stone boulders, the Ramstein was entirely destroyed un 1335.

L'étang de Hanau, au coeur du Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord, est un site touristique très apprécié des visiteurs, qui le fréquentent autant pour le délassement qu'il procure que pour ses richesses naturelles environnantes. Dominé par les ruines du château médiéval de Waldeck, l'étang de Hanau s'étend sur 18 hectares. Located at the highest point of the Northern Vosges (581m) this tower was built between 1889 and 1890 and she amount 25m high. Starting point of some hiking trails. The "Chalet du Club Vosgiens" opens all Sundays and bank holidays: refreshment bar and small restoration are proposed.

A forest massif that culminates at the highest point in the Northern Vosges. At its summit, a 25-m high tower that offers a wonderful 360° view over the entire region in good weather. A number of walking and biking tours are available. The Liese Rock is an unmissable element. The Chalet du Club Vosgien opens every Sunday and bank holidays to propose refreshment bar and small restoration.

Pays de Bitche has a dozen peatmires of which most are protected because of the exceptional vegetation that it shelters. A wooden walkway with descriptive panels has been created at Hanau Lake to explain the rarity and the fragility of this natural environment. From May to September, carnivorous plants, all sorts of varieties of cranberries and gracious dragonflys can be seen. the path follows through into the wood where you can discover the main varieties of trees that grow in this region. The path is approximately a kilometre long, has about 20 descriptive panels and is also part of Pays de Bitche Rock and Peat Nature Reserve.

The ruins of Grand Arnsbourg, a castle dating back to the middle of the 12th century, are between Philippsbourg and Niederbronn. The castle was built to survey the Zinsel valley leading to Bitche. Louis d'Arnsbourg was the first occupant in 1229; from 1332, it was in the hands of the Lords of Lichtenberg until the last descendant died in 1481. The Count of Deux-Pont-Bitche became proprietor until the castle was partially destroyed during the Peasant War. For security reason access is strictly forbidden. Access: Forestry car park on the D87. Follow the red rectangles up to the path which lead you to the ruin in approximately 30 minutes

The Falkenstein restaurant, in Philippsbourg in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park offers a warm welcome and serves regional and gourmets meals.

You'll be staying in one of the oldest houses on the street. It dates back to 1948 and has been completely renovated inside. Situated on a hill, it overlooks the street and the valley. Le refuge de l'ours refers to the name of the village of Baerenthal, "the valley of the bears". Each room is named after a bear. Grizzly Bear, Brown Bear and Polar Bear. The campsite is on the banks of Hanau Lake (18ha) in the middle of the very quiet forest. It has 800 metres of sandy beaches and play areas for children aged 3 to 16. The service bay at Hanau lake is open from 1st April to 30th September when the campsite is open. It has a supply unit and disposal unit. On the campsite, there are also electric points for touring pitches. To access the service bay you must pay an entrance fee.
