St-Denis-en Bugey, Ambutrix, Vaux-en-Bugey and Vaux-Fevroux: four traditional villages nestled between vineyards and streams, in the heart of a confidential valley where natural gas has been exploited since the 1920s. A walk that combines nature and heritage. Leaving from St-Denis-en-Bugey town hall. Pass in front of an old mill, then head for the Tour de Saint-Denis: a medieval tower offering an attractive viewpoint with an orientation table. Also the starting point for numerous hikes and fitness trails. Pass through Ambutrix, a picturesque hillside village, before arriving in Vaux-en-Bugey. A town with a long history of winegrowing, Vaux-en-Bugey is still dotted with working vineyards. The vineyards offer a beautiful view of the original church tower. Vaux-Fevroux or "val fiévreux" owes its name to its remote position in the valley and the fevers that once decimated the village. Continue for 2km through the woods to the remains of a natural gas well in a meadow. Natural gas has been present in the valley since 1906, and its exploitation was a world first from 1919 onwards. In 1925, Saint Gobain built a factory in Lagnieu to take advantage of this energy. The plant still exists today, producing glass for the whole world. Further along the path, you can access the Buizin vats and waterfalls.

The Dombes heritage is revealed: La Moutonnière, the Moulin de Faux and the Château de Richemont. The GR® de Pays Tour du Revermont offers seven days of hiking on the limestone hills of the Revermont, the foothills of the Jura Massif. It can be shortened thanks to a number of itineraries. The GR® de Pays Tour du Revermont allows you to discover the Revermont, or southern Jura mountains, a transition zone between the Bresse plain and the Bugey. This massif is made up of two mountain ranges, culminating at the Signal de Nivigne (758 m), which frames the Suran valley.

In the heart of Bugey, this section of the ViaRhôna moves slightly away from the river and heads gently towards the authentic villages, châteaux and vineyards of the Balcons du Rhône region. The River Ain flows into the Rhône at Anthon, where a remarkable natural site marks a sharp contrast with the urban area nearby. Then comes the small village of Jons on the outskirts of Greater Lyon, the Jonage canal and the park, Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage. There is a temporary section on small roads.

Hike to discover the Ain river gorges. Distance : 25km - Hours : 7 - Slope : 654m From 1st June to 30th September 2015, the Serrières-sur-Ain bridge will be closed for works. The hike can not be followed in totality : the round trip will be necessarly by the same bank.

The GR® de Pays "Tour de la Vallée de l'Ain au Pays du Cerdon" starts on the banks of the Ain, passes through Jujurieux and its thirteen châteaux, then visits the Cerdon wine-growing region. The GR® de Pays "Tour de la Vallée de l'Ain au Pays du Cerdon" offers a wide range of landscapes: banks of the Ain, vineyards, undergrowth, valleys and panoramic views. The route also reveals the region's rich past, with its barns in the vineyards, bread ovens, washhouses, watering places and stone fountains.

Riding along the water's edge, in the Gorges de l'Ain. An environment bursting with greenery, where only the mallard ducks and a few swans disturb the ambient calm... The department of Ain owes its name to the river that cuts a chaotic path from north to south through gorges, faults and picturesque cluses... dividing the territory into two roughly equal halves. The Ain river rises near Nozeroy (39) and forms a sort of link between the plains of Bresse and Dombes and the mountains of Bugey... History tells us that the river's name was far from unifying when it came time to name the department! Some would have preferred "Bresse" or "Bresse et Bugey". In the end, it was the Constituent Assembly that settled the debate, opting for the name "l'Ain" in January 1790. The route follows the river and passes through the Ain gorges, in a green and calm environment. The Ain à vélo loops are currently being modified, and new signposting will follow.

A family walk with little difference in altitude. The majority of the walk is in the shade and offers a spectacular view over the valley that joins Ambérieu to Belley. The path runs along the cliff and children need to be supervised. Along the way, you will meet climbers and via-ferratists coming up from the cliff.

Created 30 years ago, the Railwayworker museum proposes to discover the past of Ambérieu en Bugey heritage. With the help of videos, functional life-size models, a switching station, a canteen, a dormitory together with an infirmary, it retraces the life of the “railway people.” We can also admire the uniforms and a very handsome collection of caps…These are all pages from the history of the town, reminding us that the railroad appeared in Ambérieu in 1856 and in its wake a change in the landscape and in village life. These installations are there to awaken buried memories through the work achieved by the museum’s archivists and volunteers.

The occupation of this superb site dates back to the 7th century (funerary chapel). During the time of the Delphino-Savoyard wars (1272-1355). The chateau was among the most important “chatelleries” (lordships) and was behind the commissioning of the chateaux of Saint-Denis and Allymes. These three sites thus formed a line of defence expected to prevent the Savoyards’ expansion to Bresse. For a number of years, the committee to safeguard old St.Germain (Comité de Sauvegarde du Vieux St-Germain), formed in 1996 under the impetus of Armand Decour, has been ensuring the upkeep of the site backed by the support of the town. What remains today of the Medieval chateau are sections of the surrounding wall (including two “false towers”), the wall that separates the upper court from the lower bailey, and a very lovely ogival door.

Perched high up in the hills overlooking Ambérieu-en-Bugey the Château des Allymes has stood guard over the town since the 14th century. The château was built by the Dauphin of Vienne in 1310. It fell into the hands of the Duke of Savoy in 1335 and became part of France again in 1601. The Chateau des Allymes (Allymes Castle) has preserved intact many features of medieval military architecture that defended the territory during the Middle Ages. The Chateau des Allymes is made up of two sections. There is an upper courtyard which is formed by four curtain walls linking the keep (donjon) to the round or watch tower. Secondly there is the outer bailey with the remains of a large fortifying wall and a small watch tower. In 1960 the Château des Allymes was listed as a Historic Monument and was saved from total ruin. It has been open to the public since 1966. The château is managed by the Association des Amis du Château des Allymes (Friends of the Château des Allymes) and today it houses exhibitions, concerts and conferences. Since 1984 the château has officially been the property of the town of Ambérieu-en-Bugey. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the listing of the château, an exhibition room was opened in 2010. It is named in honour of René de Lucinge (1553-1624), Lord of Allymes, who was instrumental in the integration of Ain into France in 1601 with the Treaty of Lyon.

Known for its annual and international Festival of baroque music, Ambronay possess many other legacy pearls. Founded at the time of Charlemagne, the Benedictine Abbey boasts today a Cultural Centre of Meeting at the heart of a tree-filled park. Roman vestiges testify of the distant origin of the village. At the heart of a wood the pathways will lead you in the different hamlets with their traditional stone houses and little heritage, at the top of the hills with majestic points of view on the Ain lowland… At the corner of a pathway, on the hights of Merland, a surprising meeting is waiting for you : the Highland Cattle, Scottish cows with long brown fur, free-range farmed . Fishing hobbyists could install their fishing rods on one of two equipped lakes, the lake of Vorgey and the lake of Longeville, ideal to discover the canoeing. 1000 years of history are waiting for you to visit ! The abbey can be visited freely throughout the year and is open daily. There are guided tours available in French and English. Take a dive in History ! Ambronay Abbey was founded in the early 9th century by St Bernard de Romans and was home to a community of Benedictine monks until the French Revolution. The abbey is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with some of its buildings dating between the 11th and 15th centuries. Today the abbey is a centre for early classical and religious music and is well known for its annual baroque music festival which takes place during September and October. During the early Middle Ages, Ambronay Abbey was self-governing, answering only to Rome. From 1282 onwards, it fell under the protection of the Dukes of Savoy. The abbey became involved in the border disputes between the Dukes and the King of France. This resulted in the abbey being heavily fortified. Today one can discover the Dauphine Tower, the Archives Tower, Saint Jacques and Saint Catherine’s Chapel and the cloister which houses a magnificent renaissance staircase. One can also see the chapter room and the sacristy which were central to monastic life. The abbey is home to the Ambronay Cultural Centre which promotes religious and baroque music, with several concerts taking place throughout the year.

Built on the municipality of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux, in the hamlet of Varey, do not hesitate to discover the Castle of Varey, which bases are medieval. The Château de Varey is located a short distance from the village of Saint-Jean-le-Vieux. There has been a fortification on this site since the 12th century. The magnificent building which can be seen there today dates from the 19th century when the château was completely rebuilt.

Due to the diversity of monuments and curiosities of the city, such as the XVIIIth century cooler, the two castles and the bucolic garden called "jardin des simples", Vertrieu is an unavoidable milestone in the Balcons du Dauphine territory. Vertrieu owes its development to its location, in a Rhone's hollow, which helped it grow its maritime activity during centuries. Its highly strategical position stands from the High Middle-Age, as the tombs in the Rue des Juifs testify. Vertrieu's architecture in the end of the Middle-Age is as urban, with its narrow lots alongside the streets, as it is rural with outside stairways typical from the winegrowers' houses, and agricultural commercial activity. Wherever, if the Rhone is linked to the town's History, so are the castles called "new" and "old" that shape the landscape. If you like romantic walks in nature or strolls nearby the river, or if you are a History lover, you can only fall for Vertrieu's charm!

Domino tents: At the heart of the Espace Eau Vive site, the 3 domino tents each sleep 6. There is a dining area with two fridges and 2 gas rings, as well as a communal tent with tables and benches for meals. Trapper tents: The trapper area comprises 4 wooden tents, each sleeping 6, a 3m x 3m kitchen tent with two fridges, 2 gas rings and a 32m² communal tent with tables and benches for meals. For all tents: Bring pillows, fitted sheets, sleeping bags (only the undersheet is provided), toilet paper and all kitchen utensils (saucepans, crockery, cutlery, etc.). There is no heating or lighting in the tents (lighting in the kitchen and dining tents only). The campsite has been awarded the ‘Accueil Vélo’ label, and is equipped with an inflation station and a totem with a number of tools, as well as covered bike lockers.

« Le gîte » has been designed to welcome groups. It includes all the equipment you need everyday… It is composed of 2 floors : upstairs, there are 6 rooms of 4 beds, one room of 2 beds (with bunk beds in each room), showers and toilets. Please bring your sleeping bags, pillows and toilet bag. We provide fitted sheets. On the ground floor, there is a kitchen, a common room with tables and chairs, a TV room and toilets. The kitchen is equipped with electric cooking plates, an oven, a micro-wave, a dish-washer, a fridge with a freezer compartment, a coee machine and all the usual kitchen tools for about 30 persons (crockery, pots and pans). We leave it up to you to bring sponge, washingup liquid, dishwashing detergent, cloth, cleaning supplies, toilet paper… We remind you that the house is available from 2 p.m the day of your arrival and has to be left at 12 a.m the day of your departure.
