Exploring Jarny, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine

The 1870 battlefields are found on the "back" of the plateau, which opens up to the west towards the Côtes de Meuse hills. Along the paths you will come across many monuments erected in memory of the soldiers and a variety of educational and fun activities.

Nestling at the bottom of the Gorzia valley, Gorze is a natural attraction for walkers. The many wooded paths climb quickly to the heights, where breathtaking panoramas open up towards the Moselle valley and the surrounding hills.

On the left bank of the Moselle, Ancy-sur-Moselle and Novéant-sur-Moselle are excellent starting points for hikes. The village of Dornot, perched on the heights, is characteristic of the wine-making villages on these slopes, with its narrow, twisting streets offering beautiful views over the Moselle valley.

Starting from the multi-purpose hall in Norroy-le-Veneur, the circuit explores the villages on the slopes of the Messin region, where the landscape is dotted with vineyards, market gardens and buildings that constitute a remarkable architectural heritage. This is a pleasant circuit, ideal for families thanks to the many safe cycling facilities.

While the village of Norroy-le-Veneur owes its name to nuts (from “Nogaredum”: the Land of Nuts), it was also well-known for its vines until the 19th century. To counter the ravages of phylloxera, it was to develop fruit growing, with strawberries and other fruits, as is borne out by the orchards still found on the slopes. This village, which dates back certainly as far as the Merovingian period, also boasts an outstanding architectural heritage, with numerous fountains, its fortified church and the old mill, where the most recent extension and the bucket wheel date from 1845.

The GR5F hiking route leads from the source of the Moselle in Bussang to its confluence with the Rhine in Koblenz. It enters France in Apach and provides a link via the Moselle valley. This short second stage leads walkers from Yutz to Rombas via the Côtes de Moselle hills.

On the right bank of the Moselle valley, Jouy-aux-Arches and Corny-sur-Moselle occupy a favoured location. Jouy-aux-Arches is known for its impressive aqueduct, built by the Gallo-Romans to carry drinking water from the springs of Gorze to Metz, a distance of 22 km.

The GR5 hiking route links the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It enters France in Mondorff. This second stage takes hikers from the Côtes de Moselle hills to the Pays des Etangs lakes of Dieuze.

The GR5F hiking route leads from the source of the Moselle in Bussang to its confluence with the Rhine in Koblenz. It enters France in Apach and provides a link via the Moselle valley. This third stage takes hikers from Rombas to Plappeville, at the gateway to Metz.

This 23 km long greenway runs along the Orne river from Rombas in Moselle to the Moineville leisure area in Meurthe-et-Moselle. This trail is a gentle way of discovering the landscapes of a former steel-making valley. Entirely flat and on its own site, it will delight lovers of cycling and discovery, whether alone, with family or friends. The Greenway is a traffic route open to all non-motorised means of transport.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Church built around 1840, converted in 1896 into a patriotic memorial of the Mars-la-Tour battle in August 1870.

Classed as a "French National Museum", this history museum is the only one today in Europe to solely focus on the 1870 War and the annexation of Alsace and La Moselle (1871- 1918). The museum has chronological and thematic multimedia demonstrations.

From prehistory to the present day, the museum traces the story of the ‘Terre de Gorze’, the extensive abbey territory. Films present the Gallo-Roman aqueduct and the abbey history.

Pond Lachaussée (300 ha) is located at the crossroads of a vast network of wetlands of major biological interest, labeled RAMSAR in the heart of the clay plains of the Woëvre. This pond has extensive reed beds and bushy areas surrounded by very welcoming wet meadows for many water birds. Three bird observatories allow the public to watch the birds without disturbing the environment: 1. Domaine du Vieux Moulin, nursing home of France's Paralysed Association (APF), the observatory is installed on the dike of the pond and to learn about the discovery of the birds. Nearby, a fixed panoramic telescope is available. A reading table also helps give some pointers. 2. On the north cornea of ​​the pond, an observation tower provides an interesting perspective on this wild part of the pond and offers a view on the reed beds. The wetlands trail passes by. 3. On the D131 between the villages of Haumont-Les-Lachaussée Lachaussée and a bird observatory located above the water offers a remarkable view of the pond and the Domaine du Vieux Moulin. This observatory is accessible to people with disabilities. A bicycle rack allows for easy parking without entering the environment. Starting from the Domaine du Vieux Moulin, a discovery trail of wetlands (12km) lets go around the pond (Follow the signs for hiking). This landscaped route offers discovering the fauna and flora of the pond, rich forests and damp meadows which surround it. On the way, a bridge leads to the "Old Oak" several centuries old. In winter, before sunset, you can see the cranes returning to the dorm. To maintain the ecological interests of the site, it has been a nature reserve classification Régionale.Une specific regulation applies to it. The Conservatory of Natural Spaces of Lorraine, site manager, developed in partnership with the Domaine du Vieux Moulin, owner of the pond, recovery missions and animations that can be found in the calendar of nature activities.

The 1838 church of Malancourt is built on the ruins of a 14th century church and on a crypt from the early Middle Ages. A Merovingian sarcophagus, an altar support and columns in the Carolingian style can be seen there, as well as a magnificent 16th century altarpiece, a 15th century statue of Saint-Juvin and a Christ on the Cross, a 17th century statue of Saint-Roch, and an 18th century Republican Virgin.

The Quarries have been exploited since the Romans: places of extraction, crushing, sawing and sculpture. The Espace Simone presents an exhibition of tools from the stone industry and fossils made of Jaumont stone, as well as the military periods of 1870-1871 and 1914 to 1918. Jaumont stone, a contraction of "Jaune mont", is a granular limestone from the Jurassic period which owes its particular colour to iron oxide. The quarries, where it is still exploited today, cover former iron mines. Visit by appointment only.

Instantly recognizable because of its golden hue. Jaumont stone was used to build many important works in Metz and Lorraine. It's also the star of this museum because the sculptures of Antoine Dyduch displayed in this 2,000 sq.m exhibition are all made from the marvellous mineral. More than just an art centre, the Jaumont Stone Museum is a veritable cultural venue wich holds evening conferences, debates and music nights.

The Curel district, bordering Meurthe-et-Moselle, used to be home to cosmopolitan working-class families from the steel industry. The construction of workers' housing was at the heart of social policy. Housing had to safeguard two principles: family life and good morals. Consequently, each dwelling had its own entrance and no room could be sublet.

C'est le type même de l'église fortifiée du Pays Messin. Le choeur à cinq pans, avec voûtes et nervures croisées, pettites fenêtres et oculus quadrilobé, date du 15° siècle. La nef est du 17° siècle. Mais rarement église de campagne a possédé une telle richesse en statues du 14°au 20° siècle: un Saint Lazare mîtré (14° siècle), patron des mendiants, des pauvres et des lépreux, un Saint Eloi en pierre de Jaumont (15° siècle), un Saint Vincent en bois et un Saint Jean Népocumène du 18° siècle, une Vierge à l'Enfant (début du 19° siècle), un Saint Nicolas et un Saint Joseph dû à un sculpteur alsacien contemporain. Dans la sacristie, on peut voir un Christ en ivoire du 17° siècle. L'église se visite sur rendez-vous uniquement.
