ArrayYour Experience Explore the architectural manifesto that is the Villa Cavrois, designed by architect and figure of the modernist current, Robert Mallet-Stevens. This emblematic piece of his work was built for a textile manufacturer, Paul Cavrois, and his family in the early 1930s. This villa was dubbed a historic monument in 1990, and the restoration program began well into the early 200s. What makes it so appealing is its imposing proportions, the separation of two symmetrical wings, the lack of ornamental decor in the villa, and the escalation of the rooftop terraces. Not to mention, the modern touch post-renovation that included central heating, elevators, and the use of new industrial materials and techniques. Located in a meadow, this is the house in which Benoit-Joseph Labre was born on March 26 1748. His life as a prilgrim led him to Rome. He was beatified in 1860 and canonized in 1881.

Built in 1388 as a reward to the people of Béthune for their loyalty to the French Crown, this is the last vestige of the town's medieval history. It was destroyed by bombing in 1918 leaving only the 16th part intact. The Belfry of Béthune is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has bee classified as a Historic Monument since 1862

This launching ramp shoots some 30 flying bombs from 16th of June to September 1944. Target of allied bombing, it caused the destruction of a large part of the village. A communal initiative made it possible to rebuild it partially in 2011.

It took five former miners (helped by a few younger people) eight years to reconstruct the underground world at the bottom of a mine pit. Here, the visitor can hear thesound of the working machinery and the raised cries of the miners. Location Information: The British Cemetery is nearly one kilometre west of the town on the road to Sains-les-Pernes. GPS coordinates: 50.48333, 2.3958 Visiting Information: Wheelchair access to this site is possible, but maybe by alternative entrance. Identified Casualties: 1096 Historical Information The cemetery was not begun until April 1918 when the 1st and 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Stations came to Pernes, driven back by the German advance. In May, the 6th and 22nd Clearing Stations arrived and in August, they were joined by the 13th. Almost all the burials were made by these units, but a few of the graves were brought into the cemetery after the Armistice. There are now 1,078 First World War burials in this cemetery and 18 graves from the Second World War, all of the latter dating from 3-4 September 1944. There are also 3 non Commonwealth burials here.

This was the first battle planned by the BEF, rather than being a reaction to German advances. Designed to break through the German trench line to the Aubers Ridge and possibly Lille, when a supporting French attack was cancelled the British carried on. The attack was undertaken by Sir Douglas Haig's First Army whose Chief of Staff was Sir John Gough VC who was shot and died in this battle. Sir Henry Rawlinson's IV Corps attacked on the left and Gen. James Willcock's Indian Corps on the right, aiming to squeeze out a German salient that included the village itself. The plans were drafted in great detail and tactical surprise was achieved and an initial break-through. After this success, however, the fog of war descended and there were unexpected delays and communication problems leading to a failure to bring up reserves to maintain the momentum of the attack. The German defenders were able to rush in reinforcements and dig a new line behind the British break-in. The artillery bombardment, aided by photo reconnaissance, was too light and ammunition quickly ran short. Sir Douglas Haig, the First Army commander, cancelled further attacks and ordered the captured ground to be consolidated, in preparation for a new attack further north. In the four British Divisions taking part 544 officers and 11,108 other ranks were killed, wounded and missing. German losses, including 1687 prisoners, were also about 12,000.
