Who could imagine nowadays that the peaceful village of Martinpuich was once the theatre of terrible battles during the First World War? Devastated to such an extent that it was placed in the Red Zone, i.e. never to be rebuilt and farmed again, it is now a charming village that has managed to create a future for itself by integrating the vestiges of its past. Thankfully the birdsong has finally erased the sound of the pipe band and the cannon from our minds, allowing nature to return to its peaceful state, which today is disturbed only by the gentle grumbling of tractors.

More than just a walk, this hiking trail invites you to remember those who have been lost. “A debt of honour”, these few words alone are able to sum up what the British feel when they think of their soldiers who fell on these battlefields during the First World War. The Battle of the Somme, during which the Butte de Warlencourt represented a key strategic challenge, resulted in the deaths of some 125,000 Allied soldiers from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Newfoundland. English writer Rudyard Kipling, who lost his only son in the war, chose “Their name liveth for evermore”, taken from the Book of Ecclesiasticus, to be the phrase that would be engraved on all the memorial stones.

Over just a few kilometres, this trail takes you to numerous sites associated with the key events of the 20th century. These include visible remnants of the First World War such as the cemeteries and British memorials, and of the Second World War in the form of the remains of an airfield, as well as places associated with the fates of two men who fought during these two conflicts: Lieutenant Commander Oswald Wainwright and General Aubert Frère. In addition to this rich past, Grévillers has retained its rural spirit, which makes this little piece of the country, sandwiched between woodland, meadows and farmed fields, a much-loved destination for walkers.

This circuit lets you explore Bapaume and the village of Ligny-Thilloy as you walk the Lime Tree Trail. This walk allows you to discover natural areas, farmland, the history of the post-war reconstruction of rural and urban landscapes... and learn about the figures, both legendary and real-life, who have left their mark on this place.

This trail, which passes through varied surroundings, will take you to the sites of three nearby abbeys: Mont-Saint-Eloi, Etrun and Maroeuil. There you will discover some ruins that managed to survive the destruction of the revolution. The trail is certified by the French Federation of Hiking (FFRP).

The Hirondelle Trail takes you through the Commonwealth cemeteries, allowing you to explore a region that was completely devastated in 1917. The four villages you will discover along the way also bore witness to the Reconstruction and the “liberated regions” style that is reflected in the area’s rural heritage. The villages were completely destroyed, but let’s not forget the work it took to make this shattered land suitable for farming once again: shell holes, craters, barbed wire, saps, unexploded shells, mines, trenches... 90 years on, this has become one of France’s richest, most productive cereal-growing areas!

This trail takes you to the theatre of the famous Battles of Bullecourt, which took place in April and May 1917. The village changed hands some twenty times over the course of that year. These battles took a terrible toll, with British and Australian casualties numbering 8,893 and 10,771 respectively. More than 10,000 Germans also lost their lives. The 2,249 Australians and 1,875 Brits who were killed at Bullecourt have no known grave. Their names are inscribed on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and on the British Memorial at Arras. Many still lie buried in the earth of the Artois region. The memory of this battle has been kept alive by the “Digger” statue (the term used by Australians and New Zealanders to refer to a veteran), which was erected in 1992. It was created by Australian sculptor Peter Corlett, the son of a Great War veteran. The Digger’s uniform and insignia symbolise the four Australian infantry divisions who fought here. Since 2010, a French remembrance stele has also commemorated the sacrifice made by the soldiers at Bullecourt. A museum has even been opened at Bullecourt to pay tribute to those lost during these battles.

ArrayYour Experience Explore the architectural manifesto that is the Villa Cavrois, designed by architect and figure of the modernist current, Robert Mallet-Stevens. This emblematic piece of his work was built for a textile manufacturer, Paul Cavrois, and his family in the early 1930s. This villa was dubbed a historic monument in 1990, and the restoration program began well into the early 200s. What makes it so appealing is its imposing proportions, the separation of two symmetrical wings, the lack of ornamental decor in the villa, and the escalation of the rooftop terraces. Not to mention, the modern touch post-renovation that included central heating, elevators, and the use of new industrial materials and techniques. You will explore the vast living area, the intriguing façades, the stunning terrace, and of course, the 72-meter-long water mirror, reflecting the beauty of Villa Cavrois quite nicely!

A classic design where yew and box topiaries play and interact in beautiful harmony with espalier pear and apple trees, on an English style close-mown lawn. You can also admire a wonderful collection of 400 historical gardening tools and a permanent exhibition of the paintings of Nicolas Watine, owner of the site, who created the garden in 1998 around a sixteenth-seventeenth century manor house.

Nœux-les-Auxi is a charming little village nestling at the bottom of a dry valley perpendicular to the Authie. The village square is shaded by linden trees over a hundred years old, and it is around this square that social life is organised, with the school, the town hall and the school accommodation, as well as religious life, with the church and the former presbytery. The village has retained its festive character, with traditional, cultural and nature festivals, the highlight of which is the transhumance to the Riez nature reserve in May. The route takes in the chapel, the village café, the château, a beautiful Picardy farmhouse, cob buildings and the church. To admire the scenery, walkers can also take advantage of two hiking trails starting from the village and a 12 km loop, the sentier des Capris.

The 43rd Casualty Clearing Station was posted there from April to June 1916, part of the Lucknow Casualty Clearing Station in June, the 6th Stationary Hospital from June 1916 to the end of August 1918, and the 3rd Canadian, 19th and 43rd Casualty Clearing Stations in the summer of 1918. The great majority of the burials in the cemetery were carried out from these hospitals. St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension was used from March to August 1918 and after the Armistice, one grave of 1915 was brought in from Dennebroeucq. The CEMETERY now contains 210 Commonwealth burials of the First World War. There are also 12 Second World War burials, all dating from late May - early June 1940 and the withdrawal of the British Expeditionary Force ahead of the German advance. The Walligny pond is part of the basin in the catchment area of the river Canche which has a large number of alluvial wet zones. The site is disconnected from the river Canche which is now well canalised. This site plays the role of retention basin thus limiting flooding during heavy rainfall. This site was modified by man for a long time, but today it has regained its wild state, which is what makes it unique.
