Discovery of Chalosse through its natural and historical heritage.

A long stage links Hagetmau, in the south of the Landes department, and Orthez, an emblematic village in Béarn, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Via a succession of country roads, it passes through the villages of Chalosse until it enters Béarn via the crossroads town of Sault-de-Navailles. Portions of the road finally take over and bring you closer to Orthez, a stage of great historical and architectural interest.

Alongside the Adour and the Arroudet stream, this wooded route is very pleasant on sunny days.

Located in the Chalosse region of the Landes département, Habas is one of the 24 communes of the Communauté de Communes du Pays d?Orthe et Arrigans. This charming village, set on the heights of the Gave de Pau, has a population of around 1,500, and has maintained its vitality thanks to a rich network of associations and the preservation of its local shops. Habas takes its name from the Gascon word "fabas", meaning a place fertile with beans. Located on the Roman road linking Bordeaux to Astorga, the area became a stopping-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in the 14th century. At the same time, the town began to develop around its feudal castle, the site of today?s town hall. In 1638, Louis XIII granted Habas letters patent authorizing the holding of a market every Friday.

Misson is a small village that stretches over 14.7 kilometres. It is situated at an altitude of 90 metres and has about 800 inhabitants. It is crossed by the stream of Leplace, the stream of Grand Arrigan and the stream of Yats. Misson is twinned with the town of Arnac in the Cantal. In 1641, Misson belonged to the royal provostry of Dax, which bought from Louis XII certain domain rights. Fifty years ago, Misson was home to renowned clog makers and gem makers. Today these trades have disappeared but they reappear in some craft exhibitions. Nowadays, the identity of the village reflects a long history.

A unique walk that leads you to Buglose in the footsteps of the young Vincent de Paul and takes you to the white chalet, passing by the strange ice house and its pond. 2 markings to follow: red on the first part of the circuit and yellow on the second.

18 km from Dax, on one of the magnificent ridges, the Haut Clouzet farm awaits you just a stone's throw from the centre of Montfort-en-Chalosse. Producers of duck foie gras, Annie, Jacques and Stéphane Loupret welcome you in pretty aprons bearing the effigy of this typical Chalosse house. Admire the poultry raised in the open air, while under the large farm building, farm life is organised with the feeding and processing of the ducks. At the end of this artisanal chain, Annie explains all the good recipes of the farm: confits, duck gizzards, rillons and other traditional pâtés. Especially try the delicious duck ballotine. Don't leave this country atmosphere, and go to the Chalosse Museum located only 2 km away, a real little hamlet of yesteryear. You can reach it via the Voie Verte de Chalosse.

The Ferme du Haut Pouyet is located in Saint-Aubin, in a lush green corner of the Landes region called Chalosse. It is a few minutes’ drive from Mugron, which boasts superb views of the Adour Valley, a heritage trail in the centre of town and Chalosse’s Voie Verte greenway passing through it. Poyaller Mill is a kilometre away, where you can take a nature break surrounded by animals and the Gouaougue stream. In 30 years of business, Vincent hasn’t changed a thing in the know-how passed down to him from his mother. As a sign of his product quality, many former fatteners come to stock up at the farm, because they find exactly the same ducks there as the kind they raised themselves in the past. The ducks are reared on grassy pastures and then fattened with maize grown on site. In the interest of the animals’ welfare, the ducks are fattened in an open room facing the Pyrenees.

In the south of the Landes, in the village of Baigts, the tradition of the landaise race goes back to the 19th century. At that time, the access to the village square was closed by carts and the brave youngsters would dodge the onslaught of the cows. In 1911, the town council decided to build boxes and a stand, adjacent to the town hall, located on the town square. During the patronal celebrations of August 15th until 2004, the track was closed by removable wooden barriers. For safety reasons, they had to be removed and replaced by metal fences, but the stands remain natural: the spectators sit on the slope surrounding the square from the church, in the shade of the fir and chestnut trees.

At the top of an imposing hillock, in the enclosure of the former cemetery, which can be reached by a monumental staircase and a portal, the church of Notre Dame de Baigts immediately offers the visitor the strangeness of the architectural layout of its chevet.

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Lahosse, which had been out of use for many years, was razed in 1929. The materials were kept and used to build a new church, financed by a subscription. The building was designed by three architects from Biarritz (Mouny, Nicaud and Sajous). The church is not old, it seems quite simple. However, if you look closely, you will discover an astonishing Art Deco ensemble from the beginning of the 20th century: pure and simple volumes, a flat ceiling, large arches that fall on double columns and powerful capitals with cleverly stylized interlacing.

In Montfort-en-Chalosse, come and discover André Lataste’s honey house. This artisanal beekeeper specializes in raising queen bees and in producing honey, flower pollen and royal jelly. This nature-loving enthusiast will take you on a tour of his honey house and beehives by appointment (minimum of 10 people). He will also give you the chance to taste his different honeys. You can also go there simply to buy his products. As you leave, stop at the 12th century church, a listed Historic Monument. Its military architecture will surely be a surprise. In the village centre, near the market hall, take advantage of the trail to explore this 13th century fortified town. Don’t forget to go to the Chalosse Museum, where 19th century agricultural life and tenant farming will reveal all their secrets to you. Lastly, by bicycle or on foot, travel awhile on Chalosse’s Voie Verte greenway. What a day!

Forbidden to motorised vehicles, it can take you to Mugron (city route with the free Tèrra Aventura application, Rouge Garance art gallery, cellar...). The gîte they offer is attached to their house but has an independent entrance. It is a former doctor's office. Put your nose in the library, it's in the bathroom !
