Between narrow gorges, tunnels and viaducts, your cycling trip on the Dolce Via here follows the traces of the past. On your way, the old mills and silk weavers' workshops bear witness to the richness of the valley, which once welcomed many workers. The viewpoints on the Eyrieux are numerous and allow for beautiful contemplative pauses. Below the greenway, the calm waters of the river are an invitation to stop. Pont-de-Chervil is an ideal place for a refreshing moment halfway through the stage. You can walk further and further into the Eyrieux gorges, in the heart of an environment that sparkles with green and orange in the autumn, because here the chestnut tree is king.

La Voulte-sur-Rhône is the starting point of the Dolce Via route. You leave ViaRhôna to cycle into the Eyrieux valley in pursuit of the old locomotives. Your adventure in the footsteps of the old railway line begins in the middle of the peach orchards where you begin a spectacular and gentle climb up the valley to Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux. Add the view of the valley, its river, its villages perched on the other side and your ride becomes, from the first strokes of the pedals, an enchantment. And the journey has only just begun... The route is signposted "Dolce Via" and is laid out on a former railway line, alternating between greenways with gore (granite sand) or bituminous surfaces and low-traffic roads. The gradient is minimal (1%). The beautiful Corten steel railings (rusty appearance), not only aesthetic but particularly welcome to avoid any risk of falling along the many steep slopes of the route, are a reminder of the route's railway past. Be careful crossing the departmental road 120 when arriving at Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux before reaching the station.

As soon as it leaves Le Cheylard, the cycle route changes its scenery: the Dolce Via, with the Eyrieux as its main thread, now runs into the steep valleys of the Boutières. If today the route can be travelled by bike without effort, imagine for a moment the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which is the result of a real technological feat due to the nature of the terrain. The last vestiges of this extraordinary railway past, the viaducts, tunnels, bridges and trenches, all carved out with the strength of your wrist, accompany you to Saint-Agrève. A colourful and easy walk.

The scenery changes on this side towards the north-east. The cycle route, still on greenways, gets higher and higher and every pedal stroke is a wonder. Five viaducts, two bridges and three tunnels later, the landscapes of the Boutières and the Monts d'Ardèche, with the Mont Gerbier de Jonc and the Mont Mézenc in the background, await you. A nice reward before arriving at the pass and crossing the mountain by the Nonières tunnel, the longest of the Dolce Via with its 320 metres (lit!). You can then peacefully drive the remaining 12 km to Lamastre on almost freewheels. Here, a mythical steam train awaits you for an incomparable discovery of the Gorges du Doux to Tournon-Saint-Jean and ViaRhôna.

At the 1st gate continue up along the basalt cliff to the junction at LA PLAINE DU REGARD DIRECTION: BERZEME Then cross the pastures towards Berzème, crossing the junction at BRASSE NEGRE DIRECTION: BERZEME Follow a little road beside the fields up to the crossroads at FAUGERES DIRECTION: ST PONS You will then enter a typical Coiron pasture in which you will stay well over to the left following the markings. Then take a path that goes quite steeply down to La Roche Chérie. From this point, go back down the road to LA PEYRE DIRECTION: ST PONS From there, climb up through the middle of a field, where you will then continue along beside the fence and then turn right onto a path that will take you back to the village. Variant: at La Peyre, climb up to the left on a path on basalt flow deposits. Once on the plateau, turn right along the fences to cross the Plaine du Regard, with a magnificent view point! You will then come back to the Plaine du Regard pillar, which indicates the descent back to St Pons.

During this walk, do not hesitate to climb to the top of La Croix de Juliau which will offer you a breathtaking view of the Coiron plateau and the Valvignères plain. Climb up again to the junction at FONT NEGRE DIRECTION: ALBA Passing through “Serre Leroux” (altitude 400m), continue towards Alba by going down beside the small pond of Font Nègre Steady climb through the marlstones, then the Malavas plain up to BOURBOULET DIRECTION: ALBA You will walk across a prairie invaded with a multitude of blue flowers in the spring up to LA CROIX DE JULIAU DIRECTION: SUMMIT OF LA CROIX JULIAU Allow one hour out and back from Bourboulet to reach the summit of La Croix de Juliau (altitude 553m). Tradition has it that this toponym owes its origin to the passing of Julius Caesar. The etymology of Juliau does indeed point to the name or forename Julius, but really has no connection with Caesar! Then take the St Jean le Centenier direction to reach ARGENCE DIRECTION: ST JEAN LE CENTENIER by crossing the hamlet of Lablachère. Continue, passing through THEOULE The term théoule, from the Occitan teule : tile, means the place where tiles and pottery were fired. Return to the village via the path in the direction of St Jean le Centenier.

The canal is now on your right. Continue on the sidewalk along Rue des Moulins. Turn right onto Chemin du Ruisseau to rue Derodon. Cross the street and turn slightly right to join the path alongside the canal, which is now on your left. Cross Rue Jean Henri Fabre, and continue along the path until you come to Rue des Frères Montgolfier. Turn left up rue Montgolfier to the intersection with rue des Moulins. Turn right and walk down the street until you come to Chemin du Thon. Cross the latter and enter the park in front of you. Follow the driveway through the park until you reach the canal. Turn right again and turn left into rue Marius Moutet. Go up the street and cross rue Louis Ageron. Continue along rue Marius Moutet until you reach the impasse de la Petite Marquise on your left. This leads to Chemin de Robinson. Turn right onto Chemin de Laplat. Cross the road and enter the Fédération de Pêche parking lot. Take the left-hand path and follow the loop back to the Petite Marquise canal. Turn left and follow the canal (which is on your right). Cross rue Auguste Giraud. Continue ahead on the path. At the end, turn right, then left to reach the start of the allée Adolphe Pegoud. Take a few steps to your right and you'll be on Avenue Jean Clément. Turn left and stay on the sidewalk along the canal. Avenue des Baumes is the continuation of Avenue Clément. At the intersection with rue Paul Gataud (on the left), cross Avenue des Baumes and continue along the sidewalk. Pass the soccer pitch, the veterinary clinic and the tabac Presse. After the latter, turn right and follow the canal de la Grande Marquise, continue on Impasse d'Alzon, then at the end turn right up rue de Thibert until you cross rue Chateauvert. Cross and turn left. Take the 2nd lane on the left (before the butcher's shop) to follow the Canal des Malcontents Nord. After the children's playground, turn left into the park and walk up the driveway. Take Rue Sainte Thérèse on the left as far as Rue Chateauvert, then turn right up this street. On the left, follow Résidence Chateauvert along the canal (do not turn right into Résidence Chateauvert). Cross Rue de Serbie, continue straight on until you reach Rue Jean Joseph Génissieu. Turn right and follow this up to Place de la Paix. Continue straight ahead on Cours Voltaire until you come to Rue du Clos Gaillard. Turn left into Rue Paul Bert. Turn right in the direction of the train station and return to your starting point.

Discover these dolmens and standing stones when you walk around the village of Saint-Laurent-sous-Coiron. On the educational trail (sheet 10 of the topoguide) you will discover these Celtic prehistoric curiosities: 8 Caussenard-type dolmens dating between 3300 and 1800 BC have been identified, such as the Devès de Serre dolmen from the end of the Neolithic (1800 BC) accessible by a gap of around a hundred meters from the path. At the 8th educational panel, move 100m away from the path following the panel to discover the Peyregrosse menhir (or Chante Epine) which has the particularity of being made of basalt.

A fortified and perched medieval site exceptionally preserved. Located on a rocky headland, in a water drop shape, the village dominates the Barrès plain, spotlighting the remnants of its medieval past. Visitor arrives through the Notables’ door, which is the main access; he can see the particular configuration that allowed defending it. Through the heart of the village, several stalls look like they are ready to open. The Dungeon (from the late 12th century), head office of the City Hall, highlights the limestone stone, in contrast to the chequered buildings that combine white and black stones of Coiron. Fortified village which is listed building as historic monument, Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès is also labelled as a “Village of character" since March 19th, 2012. This medieval village is perched on a basalt neck from the Barrès plain. There are lots of narrow streets, winding roads and houses in basalt. Built on a rocky headland overlooking the plain and the current road from Privas to Le Teil passing by Meysse, towards the Coiron plain, Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès is a good example of a fortified village, which is partially preserved and restored. It has six towers along the ramparts and four others (including the prison tower) protecting the castle. The dungeon is from the end of the 11th century, the additions of the castle have been added in the 12th and 13th centuries. We can see The Chambaud de La Tourette family’s heraldry, above the City Hall door, in the renovated buildings of the castle. Sir "Stéphane", a knight, would have built a fort at the Barry, in front of Saint-Vincent-de-Barrès in 925. Before the 10th century and according to the “charta vetus”, the diocese of Viviers created a foundation on the Gallo-Roman villa territory: the villa Artenica. In 1020, the Bishop of Viviers swapped with the Benedictines monks of Cluny the church of Saint Vincent with the church of Meysse. The Benedictines monks stayed almost until the French revolution. In 1905, Genton of Barrès took part of the first crusade. A disagreement between the Valentinois earl and the Bishop of Viviers about the suzerainty of the Barrès is set in 1213, to the benefit of the Bishop. Barry fort, sold to the Valentinois earl in 1256, is seized by order of the King in 1390, and returned in 1392. From 1424 to 1446, the Barrès, like the Valentinois, belonged to the Duchy of Savoy. In 1467, it belonged to the Royal domain. In 1574, Saint-Vincent was taken by the Protestant but it stayed away from the main disorders from the Wars of religion. It was the same during the French Revolution. The rampart was partially demolished between 1830 and 1905.

The Printegarde nature reserve is a special place for nature lovers. It is the highest village in this area-from here you have a real birds eye view. At one time a fortified wall surrounded it, today just a few architectural elements remain including the ruins of its castle. Labeled "Village of character" since 2020. Remains of a squared structure believed to date the end of the 12th century and for sure the 13th have been excavated. The buildings' construction reached at least two floors on a basalt foundation. The old village entrance was found through an opening in one of the ramparts. The stone columns and door hanger facing south was most likely used as for pedestrian access. Its other architectural delights and beauty can be found in the village's natural landscape which is why the area offers many outdoor activities including: rock climbing (it is the site of the department's rock climbing center and school); speleology, due its famous underground network, one of the deepest in the region; its many hiking trails and equestrian centers. Villages and Cities of Character is an official label, issued by the Departmental Tourism Committee, with the aim of networking in its department all the municipalities with a remarkable architectural and landscape heritage with the aim of developing tourism.

The construction of the church date the 17th century. No remains of that period are present today, but its existence is referred to as early as the 11th century. Interesting elements to note can be found on the church's Roman style entrance covered by a more modern bell tower. It has a three vaulted arched entrance. The one on the right may date to Roman times and is embellished by a four legged human figure.

This tower is the only thing that remains of the castle.

The Neck of Sceautres is the most important in Europe. There is a statue of the Virgen Mary at its peck. 130m above the village, the neck, plug of the old chimney of the volcano, allows us to discover the geology of the site. Between 6.6 and 7.7 million years ago, the relief was reversed following the birth of the Alps which generated the central massif. Lava flows filled the valleys and erosion caused basalt collapses. On the neck there was a castle which has completely disappeared today. The site is accessible to walkers, follow the signs.

The chapel, coil up on a neck, has been built during the XIXth century to fight against the phylloxera (vineyards illness). In the future: laying out of the interior of the chapel, extension for the crossroads and parking.
