Located on the GR10 long-distance hiking trail, this walk will take you to the Etang d'Alate, via the port of Saleix, a veritable crossroads between the Couserans and Vicdessos valleys.

A must-do loop in the Massat valley. This trail leads to the recently restored village of Goutets, home to the “Orris” (shepherds' huts), an exceptional protected heritage site. The trail rises without too much difficulty into the mountain environment of the cirque of the Trois Seigneurs massif, the highest point in the Massat canton. It allows you to discover the ancient pastoral dynamics of the village of Goutets.

A shady path that runs alongside the Garbet and then the Ars stream as far as the Pas d'Enfer gorge, past the remains of the old Prabis forge. This route is ideal for a walk on a sunny afternoon.

After 200m (remains of the old Aulus thermal baths), take the path on the right through a small gate. 0.15 I-. On the road, facing the slope, take the left-hand path (70m downhill) and head eastwards which climbs quite steeply at first until it crosses 0. 65 D- the Fouillet track, turn right and 20 m further up, take the path on the left which takes you to the plateau and crosses it (approx. 300 m) 1.45 H- Plateau de Souliou: when you reach the GR 10, turn left on the white and red path which leads you to 2.15 l'étang de Guzet Return on the same path.

The refuge is located in the Mont Valier nature reserve, an iconic Couserans peak in the heart of the Ariege Pyrenees Regional Nature Park. In the midst of this unspoilt, wild mountain landscape, after a 4-hour walk along the cross-border GR from the Pla de La Lau car park, we welcome you to the "Les Estagnous" mountain refuge. As soon as you arrive, you can introduce yourself to the warden(s) and discuss the "welcome arrangements" (obviously you have booked your overnight stay and/or meals in advance). Once you've had a rest and taken in the exceptional views, you'll go through the hikers' entrance to settle in according to the wardens' advice and, last but not least, you won't miss dinner! There's just one service for everyone, at 7.30pm! There are many hiking itineraries and multi-day tours. Summits, lakes and valleys offer a wealth of choices, not forgetting the summit of Mont Valier, just 1 hour from the refuge.

The camping-garden has 12 pitches of 80 to 100 m2, grassy, flat, shady and bordered by flowering hedges (over 300 species or varieties of ornamental plants or fruit trees). We specialize in old varieties of southwestern fruit trees and apple juice production. Claudine and Charles also offer 2 traditional tepee accommodations.
