Thanks to the Cyclo-Dombes bike rental scheme discovering the beautiful countryside has never been easier. Bikes are available for hire at the tourist offices in Châtillon-sur -Chalaronne, St-Paul-de-Varax, Sandrans and Villars-les-Dombes. With 8 adult bicycles and 7 children’s bicycles and all the necessary safety equipment (helmets etc.) baby carriages, child seats and itineraries available the Cyclo-Dombes bike rental scheme enables all the family to enjoy the fresh air of the Dombes-Saône region. Bikes are available for hire at 4 of the region’s tourist offices and can be returned to any one of these offices no matter where you picked up your bike. You can get back to your point of departure using the local shuttle bus on weekdays and with the help of local taxi companies on the weekend.

The apothecary of Bourg-en-Bresse is composed of three rooms: a laboratory which has remained intact, a back room and a dispensary, with magnificent Louis XV woodwork housing an impressive collection of earthenware and bottles. It was the pharmacy of the old hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, from the end of its construction (1782-1790) until 1963. Its laboratory is a remarkable room, as it is nowadays very rare to be able to visit one. It allows you to immerse yourself in the chemistry of the past centuries: copper stills, mortars, cast iron furnace (19th century), press, all kinds of pewter... The back room reveals the first earthenware pots, canon pots or chevrettes, as well as a library containing old books, including one from the 17th century. The oak woodwork of the dispensary gives the room a cozy character. Some parts are carved to receive exactly the corresponding ceramics, the famous "watch pots", three of which are inscribed with the famous Theriac. A journey into the pharmacopoeia of past centuries through more than a thousand containers! Distillates, powders, ointments, pills, syrups, oils, dried plants...

The only museum in France that tells the story of a vanished profession: that of the mechanics. Presentation of about 350 machines, some of which are very rare, with comments from former mechanics. A surprising discovery. Over 350 mechanical and electro-mechanical typewriters, calculators, accountants and billers, including duplicators and early dictation machines, are on display. Some of the exhibits are quite remarkable, such as an 1878 typewriter, a Braille typewriter and a Chinese typewriter with 3,000 Mandarin characters. An opportunity to discover the technical progress made from the 19th century to the 1990s, when micro-computing put an end to mechanography. Visitors can use some of the machines. The collegiate church of Notre-Dame, the stuff of medieval legend, occupies a central place in the city of Burgundy, and particularly in the hearts of its inhabitants. Construction began in the late Middle Ages, but was not completed until 190 years later! Bourg-en-Bresse parish church. The exact name of this church is "collegiate co-cathedral of Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation". The term "co-cathedral" was officially coined in 1992, to define Notre-Dame as the secondary seat of the bishopric of Belley-Ars, which returned to Bourg in the 1970s after more than 4 centuries on the other side of the département. However, it was to be a cathedral that Notre-Dame was erected in the early 16th century, but the vagaries of history and the various conflicts between Francis I and Charles V decided otherwise, and Notre-Dame definitively lost its cathedral title in 1534. The beginnings of the construction are rather vague, and although work was certainly initiated at the end of the 15th century, 1505 is the official date, supported by a bull from Pope Julius II of the same year. The aim was to enlarge and embellish a Romanesque pilgrimage chapel on this site, already dedicated to the Virgin and known as the Chapelle Sainte-Marie de Bourg, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Legend has it that a shepherd found an icon of the Virgin Mary on this spot, which, despite being deposited in the parish church of the day (located just a stone's throw from the center of the town at the time) systematically returned to the place of its discovery! It was as if Mary wanted to show the Burgundians of the Middle Ages that she wanted to be venerated here. The healing of Count Aymon of Savoy, who came to implore Sainte-Marie de Bourg, only strengthened Burgers' devotion to the woman who was to become their patron saint. In the 19th century, a chapel to the right of the choir was completely refurbished and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who became the Black Virgin over the years and is now venerated as Notre-Dame de Bourg, the town's patron saint. Her wardrobe has expanded over the centuries, and her vestments and the colors with which she is adorned depend on the liturgical season. Many of the church's furnishings are remarkable, such as the triptych donated by Nicolas Chichon (1523), the choir stalls (18th century), the Black Madonna altarpiece (19th century), Armand Calliat's white marble high altar adorned with enamel and gilded bronzes (19th century), Fyot's pulpit (1760), the great organ (17th-20th centuries), and the large choir windows by Eugène Oudinot (19th century)... Don't miss the hanging keystone and the tetramorph overhanging the choir, the Saint-Crépin et Saint-Crépinien stained-glass window (1530), the only original stained-glass window, and the contemporary stained-glass windows (1920s and 1960s). The bell tower, decapitated during the Terror, was rebuilt in reinforced concrete by departmental architect Tony Ferret, between 1909 and 1911. To mark the occasion, the belfry was fitted with 4 clock dials and a set of 23 bells; 17 bells from the Paccard company in Annecy were added to the 6 bells already in the belfry, most of which were connected to an automatic carillon still in operation today. The entrance portal is crowned by a wood-carved medallion depicting the Annunciation (under which the 15th-century cathedral was erected), surmounted by a conch in which is set a statue of the Virgin and Child by Coysevox (1855).

Just a few minutes from the A40 Bourg-Sud freeway exit and the Bourg-en-Bresse/Pont d'Ain axis, the Journans campsite invites you to relax and unwind. It is located at 192, montée de Saint-Valérien. GPS coordinates: 46.14742, 5.33094 Journans lies at the foot of the Revermont Massif, some ten kilometers southeast of Bourg-en-Bresse. Nestled in the greenery in the shade of its tall trees, the municipal campsite offers a breathtaking view of the vineyards, the village and the Bresse plain. The campsite is open from May 1 to September 30: - 31 shaded pitches, bordered by hedges, for caravans, tents, motorhomes and vans (note difficult access for large motorhomes). - 1 sanitary block with showers, WCs, washbasins, laundry and dishwashing bins, washing machine and freezer - electrical boxes (6A plugs), 1 camper van drainage system - 1 picnic table, 1 play area (swings, bowls, table tennis) Dogs and cats are welcome, but barbecues and fires are prohibited. Located on the GR59 linking the Alsace balloon to Savoie, this campsite is the ideal address for nature lovers. It's the starting point for numerous walks. Nearby: the old village, the source of the Reyssouze, the chapel of Saint-Valérien and the many paths winding through gardens, vineyards and forest, linking the surrounding villages in a bucolic way and offering beautiful views. Between Bresse, Dombes and Revermont, l'Étoile du matin offers accommodation and group activities in 6 hectares of enclosed parkland. L'Étoile du Matin is located 10 km from Bourg en Bresse, at the crossroads of the Bresse, Dombes and Revermont regions. It offers accommodation, rooms and activities for family, association or corporate groups of at least 25 people. Its 6-hectare enclosed park with trees invites you to relax, stroll and socialize. While its pony stable, swimming pools and Battle Archery area invite discovery and adventure. Formerly a vacation camp, accommodation is provided in three buildings for a total of 105 beds, divided into rooms sleeping 2 to 6, most of which have full sanitary facilities. Although we prefer to operate on a self-catering basis, our team can provide traditional, family-style cuisine, either directly or in partnership with local caterers. Our function rooms can accommodate up to 120 people.

Other facilities available include a mini-market at the campsite reception and a bar and restaurant with a delivery service available to your tent or caravan as well a wide range of entertainment organised by the domaine’s staff throughout the summer season that is sure to make your stay a memorable one.

The Municipal Camping La Raza located on the edge of a pretty little fishing pond offers to welcome you in a pleasant, calm and shady setting for a break on the road to vacation, for a week or for a longer stay to discover the beauty of the Revermont landscapes. Lovers of cultural tourism, hiking, mountain biking, fishing or local gastronomy, you will find your happiness by staying at Camping de la Raza. On the campsite, you will discover : - pitches for camping cars, caravans and tents - 6 equipped chalets, on the edge of the pond. Reservations with the Gîtes de France or the campsite - 1 mobile home - outdoor games for children, a bowling green, a ping-pong table. Pond fishing (pike, carp, roach, perch, pike-perch, bream, blackbass, tench) has stations equipped for people with reduced mobility. Fishing permits are on sale during the opening hours of the campsite. To visit : Meillonnas and its earthenware, Bourg en Bresse and the Royal Monastery of Brou, the Grange du Pin and its supervised bathing in summer, as well as the Mont Myon, departure point for paragliding.
