Grandvaux's dynamic agriculture produces infamous cheeses such as Comté and Morbier. It also contributes towards maintaining the open landscapes of this walk along the outskirts of meadows and woods. From SAINT-LAURENT'S CENTRE, head up the village along "route de Genève" until you come to the roundabout and Saint-Laurent - the ridge (yellow waymarking). The trail cuts across the parking lot and heads into the pasture. It takes a right-turn and ascends the grassy slope following along the Campsite. Continue through the pasture until you come to a path suitable for vehicles (former tram line) and follow this path until you reach les Maisonnettes. The path ascends to the right and passes under the railway tunnel. Continue your route through the pasture until you reach les Pierres. Cross the road and continue on the path at the bottom of the combe that will lead you to En Fouradon and then Les Cloisons. The forest path heads to the right, past the source (metallic basin). At a crossroads, take the uphill path to the left towards les Jeannez, until you reach the hamlet. Then take the road opposite you towards les Poncets, located just below the D437. The path branches off to the right and continues on to Salave de Vent via "rue du Vieux Chalet" (former cheese dairy to the left recognisable from the small loophole windows on its northern facade). Return to the D 437, and follow it around to the right for 20 m. Turn right to cut through the hamlet. A wide path then follows along an allotment before opening out onto "Chemin de l’œuf". Rouges Truites lake discovery circuit

This lake’s privacy, at the bottom of a valley in Grandvaux, is equalled only by its beauty, which reveals its peat bogs and reedbeds. From the Le Bugnon chalet behind you, follow the white path to the right. This path alternates between woods and meadows. Carry on straight until you come to round metal bars in the ground: this is a cattle grid (vehicles can pass through, but cattle cannot. This means the cows are well kept!) Before crossing, take a quick trip on the grassy path to your right to a small cabin (built after the 1999 storm, this small structure was used to house a pump which watered the woods and avoided them becoming damaged). Take the time to admire the peat around you before returning the way you came and continuing left on the white path. Further along, on exiting the forest, you will come to a large meadow at the Rquai bridge (Pont du Rquai). Take care when heading along the barbed wire to your left, you will discover a small opening to enter the field. Follow the grassy path that is still visible and head along the white stone. You will come to the entrance to another field, which may be obstructed depending on the season by an electrical wire, take care to put the wire back in place if necessary. Continue towards the small wooden bridge over the river. Continue straight, heading up the chariot path lined with trees. When you reach another path, at Voie du tram, head left and admire the landscape while you walk. You have a birds-eye view over the entire humid area. Continue on this landscape path and it will bring you to the hamlet of Thévenins (the old cheese dairy to your right was created in 1905. Since 2017, the cooperative of the Lac-des-Rouges-Truites merged with the Saint-Pierre cooperative, becoming the Pays Grandvallier cooperative. Their combined milk - 97% of which is used to make Comté - is transformed in a new cheese dairy building in Saint-Laurent-en-Grandvaux.) When you reach the first houses, take the small road to the left that heads between a few houses. From the Station (La Gare), the old tram station, head down the road that crosses the valley towards the Domaine du Bugnon. Take care when heading along the barbed wire to your left, you will discover a small opening to enter the field. Follow the grassy path that is still visible and head along the white stone. Voltaire's Château

Voltaire's Château

Voltaire hosted many personalities in his home for almost twenty years. As he declared himself the "innkeeper of Europe", he made Ferney the place to be for an elite who flocked from all over Europe. The last 20 years of Voltaire's life were spent in Ferney. The castle was completely rebuilt. He laid out the park, not reluctant to work the land with his own hands. From Ferney, Voltaire continued his fight against intolerance and wrote some 6,000 letters, the Dictionnaire Philosophique, des tragédies... As well as giving theatrical performances at the castle, he also received many visitors. His guests came from all over the Europe of the Enlightenment. To visit Voltaire's castle is to come and meet the playwright, the committed philosopher, with a lively and generous spirit, provocative and tolerant, with a humour that is sometimes fierce. The collection of Voltaire's works and objects is displayed in a setting that keeps the traces of his presence. In the park, take a diversion under the bower where Voltaire loved to stroll with his guests. When Voltaire, aged 65, acquired the lordship of Ferney in 1758, he described himself as having found a "miserable hamlet" where he had the house of his last years built, following the construction site closely. There Voltaire received many personalities for almost twenty years. As he declared himself the "innkeeper of Europe", then Ferney became the place to be for an elite who came from all over Europe. Of this remote retreat, he became an outspoken critic of the injustice of society and defended the victims of political and religious intolerance. He carried on working actively on his literary work and published, among others, the Philosophical Dictionary, the Treaty on Tolerance, several tragedies and plays. The number of letters he wrote from Ferney reached some 6,000... Invested with the philosophical principles that nourished the spirit of the Age of Enlightenment, alternately town planner, entrepreneur and patron, he transformed the lordship of Ferney: drained marshes, construction of houses, cobbling of the streets, public fountain, construction of a new church, craftsmanship development... When Voltaire wanted to see Paris again and died there in 1778, the hamlet of a few inhabitants turned into a prosperous city of a thousand souls for a long time.
